2 Sacred Heart School Students among 2015 China Primary Math Olympiad Medallists

The Philippine contingent finished 2nd overall behind hosts China in the 2015 China Primary Math Olympiad. The Filipino delegates bagged a total of 7 gold medals, 24 silver medals, and 38 bronze medals.  There were 2 students from Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu who contributed to the country’s medal tally. Daniel Yusuke Shimizu got a silver medal while  Sheena Dianne Bernardo bagged a bronze medal.

Australian Tim Reed and Swiss Caroline Steffen became the Male and Female Champions of the 2015 Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines. Reed beat fellow Aussie Tim Van Berkel by 2 seconds to capture his first ever Ironman 70.3 title. Caroline Steffen had an easier time despite some setbacks in the bike leg as she won her 4th Cobra Ironman Philippines title.

Pinamungahan’s June Mar Fajardo capped a banner year at the Philippine Basketball Association by getting multiple awards and a PBA title in the same day. The last day of the 2014-15 PBA season belonged to Fajardo and the San Miguel Beermen.  The Beermen brought the brooms at the Smart Araneta Coliseum by beating the Alaska 91-81 en route to 4-0 sweep of their best of 7 2014-2015 Governor’s Cup Finals. 2 Injured as Ayala Center Cebu Cinema 5’s Roof Collapses

The roof of the newest Cinema of Ayala Center Cebu collapsed after a heavy downpour just minutes ago.  At least 2 people were injured based on a breaking news by Rappler.Com.  An event of Dreamscape was ongoing at Cinema 5 when water suddenly leaked from the roof and eventually causing it collapsed.  The people at the cinema were slowly heading to the exits when the roof collapsed.

Based on the latest PAGASA weather bulletin, Typhoon Chedeng (International Code: Maysak) has been tracked at 950 km East Southeast of Casiguran, Aurora.  The tropical cyclone is moving WNW at 17 kph. Chedeng still packs winds of 150 kph near the center.  It is expected to make landfall somewhere in Northern Luzon on Easter Sunday.

These areas will have occasional rains with occasional gusty winds.

Signal No.1 is now raced in Catanduanes and Camarines Sur.  Storm surges and sea surface waves of up to 2 meters are possible over the eastern coast of Aurora, Quezon and Isabela. People who are planning to go to beaches in the eastern part of Luzon are advised to monitor the situation and if possible make alternative plans for the weekend. Fishermen are also advised not to venture out over the eastern seaboard of Aurora, Quezon, Bicol Region and Visayas.

 

 

Bagyong Chedeng: Maysak downgraded to Typhoon

Bagyong Chedeng (International Code: Maysak) has been downgraded to a typhoon from a super typhoon status in the past few days.  Chedeng entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility late last night.  The typhoon has weakened significantly in the past 24 hours after continuous entrainment of dry air.  It is expected to weaken further but it remains a threat to the coastal areas of the Bicol Region and the Eastern part of Luzon.

Super Typhoon Maysak (Chedeng) Slightly Weakens, to enter PAR tomorrow

Super Typhoon Maysak has been downgraded to a category 4 typhoon.  As of of 5 p.m. today, Maysak was tracked around 120 km east of the boundary line of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It has maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h near the center with gustiness reaching 280 km/h. The weather disturbance is forecasted to move WNW at 13 km/h. It is expected to be in the PAR in a few hours.  It will be locally renamed as Bagyong Chedeng.

Super Typhoon Maysak Threatens to Ruin Holy Week plans of Filipinos

The Holy Week is one of the most important holidays of Filipinos.  Many Filipinos travel to different part of the country to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Since it is a 4-day weekend, a lot of folks take advantage of the break to get a much needed vacation.  It is also the start of summer break of the schools in the country and many college students flock to beaches like Boracay, Puerto Galera, and Bantayan, Cebu where popular beach parties are held.  A rare summer Super Typhoon has formed in the Pacific and there is a big chance that it will make landfall in some part of the country. Super Typhoon Maysak is currently at the vicinity of Yap islands.  It is forecasted to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. It will be renamed Bagyong Chedeng once it enters the Philippines.

Cebuano among the 2 Filipinos who will graduate in US Coast Guard Academy Class of 2015

Niño Jhanus Aniban from Bantayan, Cebu will be part of US Coast Guard Academy Class of 2015 that will graduate in May of this year. Aniban and fellow Filipino Sean Jayner Cabral of Calaca, Batangas were sponsored by the Philippine Coast Guard as international cadets of one of the Coast Guard academies in the world.  The two cadets will be commissioned as Ensign in the Philippine Coast Guard upon their return to the country.   Read the full report on GMA News.

2014 Bar Exam: UC Student places 5th

Michelle D. Liao of the University of Cebu College of Law garnered an 84.500% rating in the 2014 Bar Examinations to place 5th overall. Only 1,126 passed among the 5,984 examinees despite having the passing rate lowered to 73%. The 18.82% passing rate is the second lowest this millennium. Irene Mae Alcobilla of San Beda CollegeManila topped the exam with a rating of 85.500%. Four students of the University of the Philippines College of Law were among the takers who garnered the Top 10 scores.
