Pinamungahan’s June Mar Fajardo capped a banner year at the Philippine Basketball Association by getting multiple awards and a PBA title in the same day. The last day of the 2014-15 PBA season belonged to Fajardo and the San Miguel Beermen. The Beermen brought the brooms at the Smart Araneta Coliseum by beating the Alaska 91-81 en route to 4-0 sweep of their best of 7 2014-2015 Governor’s Cup Finals.
Alaska did their best in trying to prevent an embarrassing sweep by scoring 32 points in the second quarter to lead by 12 at the half 49-37. Unfortunately, the Aces guns became silent at the 2nd half as they were limited to a measly 32 points. Arizona Reid dominated the 3rd quarter as he started hitting from the 3 point area. San Miguel outscored the Aces 33-16 for a 70-65 lead going into the payoff period. The vaunted Alaska comeback never materialized as the Beermen cruised to a 10 point victory.
Reid was the best player of the game with 33 points, 6 rebound, 4 assists, 1 block and making 6 of 12 in the 3-point region. With the victory, AZ Reid claimed his first ever title after playing in the Philippines for 4 years. He won 2 best import awards with Rain or Shine but never won a title. Reid got a big lift from the Cebuano giant June Mar Fajardo who finished the game with a monster stat line of 19 points, 21 rebounds (10 offensive), 1 assist, 3 steals, and 2 blocked shots. Fajardo was adjudged the Finals MVP by the PBA Press Corp. Alaska was led by Calvin Abueva who had herculean numbers of 22 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 assists.
