Local Issues: Where should Cebu City dump its trash?

27 Jan

The Inayawan landfill closed a few days ago and Cebu City trash is all going to Pulog, Consolacion which is 12-15 kilometres away from Cebu City. The roads going to the dumpsite is narrow and there have accidents involving some of the City’s garbage trucks. There is also proposal to throw Cebu City trash in Barangay Maghaway, Talisay City but most solutions involve other local government units and eventually those cities or towns will have their own garbage problem.  Residents and businesses of Cebu City account for 1.5% of the country’s daily solid waste which is equivalent to 520 tons of trash everyday. Cebu City’s population is still growing and in a 1-3 years, the population density is bound to drastically increase with the completion of several high rise condominiums.  Trash will become a very big problem if we do not start looking for solutions today.  Do you have a good idea on how to improve the situation? Feel free to comment and share your innovative ideas.
