Pope Francis celebrates mass in Yolanda ground zero

16 Jan

Despite the bad weather, Pope Francis celebrated mass in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines.  Tacloban was the hardest hit city when Typhoon Yolanda devoted the country 14 months ago.  Pope Francis said in his homily that he really wanted to come immediately to Leyte after Yolanda and he said he has finally come. The mass was attended by thousands of victims of the typhoon and it was also watched by the whole country via television.

Twitter and Facebook was also full of messages about the Pope’s mass and visit to the Philippines.  Leyte is currently under signal no. 2 due to Bagyong Amang and this did not stop the Pope from celebrating a mass and consoling the people of Tacloban who are still recovering from Bagyong Yolanda.

After the mass, the Pope is going to travel to Palo and stay at the Archbishop Palace.  He will spend time with 30 people who were victim of Super Typhoon Yolando and the Bohol Earthquake.  His route going to Palo was by areas heavily devastated by Yolanda including Barangay 88 where there more residents who died than who survived when the storm surge hit Tacloban.
