2014 World 9 Ball Championship Day 3: Cebuano Gabica and 6 other Pinoys advance to Round of 64

Doha, Qatar- Day 3 of the 2014 World 9 Ball Championship pitted the first day victors against each other.  The winners advance to the Round of 64 while the losers will need to win one more match to advance to the next round.  2013 World 9 Ball Championship first runner-up Antonio Gabica of Cebu was the first Filipino to advance to the round of 64 after he handily beat Crotia’s Michel Bartol, 9-3.  Defending champion Thorsten Hohmann qualified as well after he survived a tough match against Japanese Tanaka Masaaki, 9-8.

Dennis Orcollo, Carlo Biado, and Raymond Faraon joined Gabica after they won their respective matches in the second session of Day 3.  2011 World 8-ball Champion Orcollo beat one of Taiwan’s brightest in Ko Ping Chung, 9-6. Ko is  the current World Junior Champion. Current World No.2 Biado beat Sweden’s Tom Storm, 9-7. Faraon avenged Efren “Bata” Reyes’ first day loss as he beat Young Hwa Jeong of Korea.

Three more Filipinos joined them in the Final 64 after the final session of Day 3. Johann Chua continued his surprising start by beating Lo Li Wen of Taipei, 9-6.  Jeffrey de Luna became the winner in the all-Filipino affair against Israel Rota.  Elmer Haya became the 7th Filipino qualifier in the knockout rounds after edging Artem Koshovyi of Ukraine, 9-8.

Warren Kiamco was not as lucky as he lost his match against Dutch pool player Niels Feijen, 6-9. He will need to win tomorrow to qualify in the knockout phase. Same goes to Elvis Calasang who got beaten by Wu Jiaqing of China, 7-9. Alex Pagulayan who is playing for Canada lost to Radislaw Babica of Poland, 6-9.
