SMART-Araneta Coliseum – Mandaue City- native JR Quiñahan hit the game winning triple to lead the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to an 89-86 win over the unlucky Meralco Bolts. With the win, Rain or Shine extended its winning streak to six and they now have the sole possession of 2nd place in the standings at 10-3 after Petron lost to sister team San Mig Coffee to fall to 9-4. The top 2 teams in the elimination round will get a twice to beat advantage in the quarterfinals. Rain or Shine’s last remaining assignment will be against Air 21 Express.
The former UV Green Lancer Quinahan finished with just 5 points along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks but the game was memorable as he hit his first ever buzzer beating game winner in his PBA career. The shot came off a well-diagramed play by Coach Yeng Guiao which called him to screen Paul Lee from a baseline inbound with 0.7 seconds left. After setting the screen, he found himself free near the RoS bench and Gabe Norwood made a good inbound pass to set up the game winner. The crowd went wild as the shot came in and the play was upheld after a compulsory review.
It was a tough loss for Meralco as it battled back from a 77-70 deficit after the first few minutes of the final period. They were able to tie game at 86-all after a big three point shot by Gary David with 8 seconds left in the game. In the next possession, the Painters went to Lee who missed a potential game winner but Meralco’s John Wilson was not able to secure the ball giving RoS a final chance with 0.7 seconds left in the clock. The miscue ended up costing them a chance at overtime. With the loss, Meralco falls to 5-8 with Barako Bull and Globalport.
After the wild finish Coach Yeng Guiao quipped “I just felt that one great shot deserves another. It was a great shot taken by Gary, and an even bigger one taken by JR. Kumbaga one chamba deserves another,”.
Jeff Chan led Rain or Shine with 16 points. Paul Lee and Gabe Norwood combined for 24 points to negate Gary David’s 25-point 8-rebound performance for the Bolts.
