NDRRMC Update on Effects of the 7.2 Magnitude Bohol Earthquake

Here is a summary on the latest National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Report on the effects of the earthquake that struck the Bohol-Cebu area yesterday morning.  This report was presented at 6:00 AM October 16, 2013.

I. Earthquake Summary 

The major tremor struck at 8:12 am on October 15, 2013.  The epicenter was in the inner towns of Bohol province.  Here are reported intensities felt in the nearby areas:

  • Intensity VII – Tagbilaran City; Bohol Province; Cebu Province, and Cebu City
  • Intensity VI – Hinigaran, Negros Occidental and Dumaguete City
  • Intensity V – Iloilo-City; La Carlota, Negros Occidental; Guimaras Island; Abuyog, Leyte; Ozamis City; Sibulan, Negros Oriental; Camiguin Island; Ginoog, Misamis Oriental; and Cagayan de Oro City
  • Intensity IV- Masbate City; Roxas City; Antique; Bulusan, Sorsogon; Hinunangan, Leyte; Dipolog City, Bacolod City; Naval, Biliran; Bayawan City; Baybay, Southern Leyte; Leyte; Butuan City and Tacloban City

As of 5:00 AM Today, Philvolcs reported that there were 725 aftershocks already and at least 12 were felt.

II. Effect of the Earthquake

  • Landslides were reported in Boljoon and Aloguinsan Cebu
  • Stampede occurred in Barba Sports Complex, Toledo and Pinamungahan Auditorium.
  • Total Dead so far is 99. There were 90 casualties from Bohol, 8 from Cebu and 1 from Siquijor.
  • 276 others are reportedly injured.
  • 558,390 families were directly affected by the earthquake.
  • 2,533 were displaced and evacuated in the province of Bohol
  • Damages were report in Tagbilaran City Port terminal, Tagbilaran Airport, Pasil Fish Port, and Iloilo Airport.  All resumed operations except the Tagbilaran City Port.
  • Several Heritage Churches were severely damaged.
  • There were damaged noticed in several government buildings: DSWD-FO VII CIU Building in Bohol (Partially collapsed), Trinidad, Bohol Municipal Building (collapsed), Sagbayan, Bohol Municipal Hall (Totally damaged), Cebu City Hall (Partially damaged), Mandaue City Public Market (Collapsed), DepEd Region VII Building (Damaged), DTI-Cebu Building (Damaged), Boljoon, Cebu Social Welfare Office (Collapsed)
  • Some Hospital operations were also affected: 4th Floor of Saint Vincent Hospital cracked forcing the evacuation of patients, and employees; Patients from Cebu City Medical Center were moved to Pahina Central Gym and other hospitals in Cebu City; Congressman Castillo Memorial Hospital was severely damaged trapping several patients (Rescue Operations ongoing).
  • Cebu Doctor’s University’s roof collapsed.
  • Several road and bridges in Bohol are deemed impassable: Clarion Bridge, Abatan and Bacong Bridge (Cortes, Bohol), Loay Bridge, and Loay Interior Road.
  • Several residences and commercial establishments suffered partial to total damage.
