USC defends Square Off: The Firm Debates title

9 Oct

New season, same result.

The University of San Carlos (USC) College of Law debating team repeated as champions in the Square Off: The Firm Debates.  Square Off is a TV program being show over the ABS-CBN News Channel where top law schools send their best students to debate about import issues in the country. Square Off is hosted by broadcast journalist Maiki Oreta and this year’s competition was sponsored by Villaraza and Angcangco Law Offices which is known in the Philippine legal circles as The Firm.

The USC debating beat the team from the University of the Philippines in the finals of Season 7 of Square Off.  The team composed of Athena Plaza, Vincent Joseph Cesista and Alvin Clyde Gregorio took the negative position on the issue of whether or not the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee should continue investigating the pork barrel scam notwithstanding the fact that cases were already filed with the Ombudsman.  The team is coached by Atty. Daryl Bretch Largo.

Aside from bagging the championship, Vincent Joseph Cesista was adjudged as the best speaker of the season.  It was the second straight victory for USC as last year their debate team beat Ateneo de Manila University in the finals.

The competition was participated by 16 schools from all over the Philippines. The schools were paired each round and the competition was single elimination tournament meaning once a team lost, it is eliminated from the contest.  Team USC beat University of Perpetual Help, Far Eastern University-De La Salle University Law, and  San Beda College of Law (Manila) on their way to the finals.

The victory has once again proven that USC is one of the best schools to study law in the country.
