2 Mar

The Philippine‘s longest reigning current world champion Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes (31-1-4 17KOs) retained his World Boxing Organization (WBO) light-flyweight belt after his fight against WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes (16-1-1 8 KOs) of Mexico ended in a majority draw decision. It was Nietes’ second successful defense of his light-flyweight title.  Nietes held the  WBO minimumweight from 2006 to 2010.  It was a very close match right from the opening bell as Fuentes was comfortable at the Cebu City Waterfront Hotel. Nietes used his superior counter-punching skills somehow negate the aggressiveness of the Mexican challenger.

Fuentes was able to do real damage in the 6th round when he bloodied both the champions eyes.  Nietes was able to fight on despite the bleeding and even landed some good shots while Fuentes was trying to finish the match. Fuentes was still charging very strongly even in the late rounds. Ahas, however, was able to find his second wind as he able to score some punches and use his lateral quickness to evade the charging Fuentes in the final 2 rounds.  By winning the final 2 rounds, Nietes was able salvage a draw as the judges scored were announced.  The bout was scored 115-113 in favor Nietes by Atty. Danrex Tapdasan while Adelaide Byrd and Pat Rusell  scored it at even 114-114.
