OFW Oliver Medenilla was the first Filipino who got booted out in this year’s World 9-Ball Championship after losing to Taipei‘s Lo Li Wen. Lo avenged his loss to Francisco “Django” Bustamante earlier in the day by winning his loser’s bracket match with Medenilla. Medenilla who has been coaching Arab players will now have to watch it from the sidelines as several kababayans continued the Filipino onslaught in the opening day.
Here are the other results of Filipino cue artists in the continuation of Day 1 action:
Antonio Gabica 9-4 Andrea Klasovic (Serbia and Montenegro)
Lee Van Corteza 9-0 Ivica Putnik (Croatia)
Marlon Caneda 9-6 Francisco Diaz-Pizarro (Spain)
Raymound Faraon 8-9 Jonny Martinez (Venezuela)
Israel Rota 2-9 Ralf Souquet (Germany)
Meanwhile, 4 Filipino cue artists won their first matches in the loser’s bracket. Raymound Faraon eliminated UK’sJones Richard, 9-6. Joven Alba won over Henrique Correia, 9-4. Israel Rota gave hope to his campaign by booting out Korean Lee Wan Su. Elvis Calasang rallied to beat Kuo Yi Che, 9-8. The foursome will need to win one more match to qualify for the knockout stages.
