Top Schools

Cebu Normal University got a 100% passing rate.  It is the only school in Cebu to hold that distinction if repeaters are included.  If only first time examinees are counted, Cebu Institute of Technology and Saint Paul College Foundation joins CNU in having a perfect passing mark. University of Cebu in Banilad produced the most number of successful examinees with 258 followed by 197 of Velez College and 173 of Cebu Doctor’s University (CDU).   Schools with over 80% overall passing rate included CNU, Velez (98%), Cebu City Medical Center (97%) and CDU (84%).

First Timers perform better

Almost 80% of the first time takers among Cebu schools passed while only 23% passed among the repeaters.  The best performing school for repeaters with at least 50 examinees is CDU which garnered a 60% passing rate.

The results of June 2013 NLE is a clear testament that Cebu remains one of the best places for students to get a degree in Nursing. There are several schools in Cebu that overwhelmingly surpassed the national passing average.  There were also 8 graduates of Cebu schools who were in the Top 10 list of the June 2013 NLE.

Cebuanos in the ABL: Season Stats of Cebuano Beermen so far

8 Apr

After the San Miguel Beermen‘s victory yesterday over the Westports Malaysia Dragons, the Beermen is sitting comfortably in 2nd place of the season standings of the Asean Basketball League (ABL) behind the AirAsia Philippine Patriots.  Here are the stats of the players who played college in Cebu that are now currently in the ABL Beermen line-up:

June Mar Fajardo (6’10” Center University of Cebu)

16 games 4.75 ppg 4.44 rpg 54.6 FG%

The pride of Pinamungahan and former king Webmaster is currently having modest averages. His stint in the ABL gave him experience banging bodies against players that are bigger and taller than his previous competition in college. He is now up and against taller and more experienced imports and so far, he has been performing satisfactorily. He made a game saving block in San Miguel’s victory over the Indonesia Warriors.

Yap will be dangerous once he finds his shooting range (from http://hoopnut.blogspot.com)

Rogelio “Roger” Yap (6’0″ Point Guard University of San Jose-Recoletos)

6 games 3.0 ppg 2.2 apg 1.3 rpg

PBA veteran Roger Yap has not yet established his shooting touch in the ABL. He is currently hitting barely 26% of his shots. San Miguel will rely on his veteran leadership in the coming playoffs. He is known to be a steady guard and a reliable defender. He has been getting minutes in past 2 games as he averages 27.5 minutes a game. Once his shots start falling, San Miguel will become more difficult to stop.

John Ferriols (6’4″ Forward University of San Jose-Recoletos)

8 games 3.1 ppg 1.8 rpg 64.7 FG%

John Ferriols have been efficient in the limited minutes that is given to him by coach Bobby Parks. The former star of the defunct MBA has been relegated to a back-up role in the ABL mainly due to the presence of tall imports in all teams. He is competing for playing time with fellow PBA vets Junjun Cabatu and Norman Gonzales.

The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras coached by Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba completed its sweep of the second round of 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season as they beat the defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters, 71-68. The win clinched the second seed for them and the twice to beat advantage in the semifinals.

There were many heroes in their latest win against UC. Rene Pacquiao made a jumper to tie the game at 68-all. Cameroonian center Justin Aboude hit a rare mid-range shot to take the lead at 70-68 with under a minute left in the game. Eleazar Armecin and Joseph Nalos who made crucial steals at crunch time. Bonifacio Guillena, Jr. scored 20 points to keep up with the Webmasters in the earlier periods. The win was a total team effort and SWU will be up against the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers. They have won their previous 2 meetings with the Lancers.

The loss did not affect UC’s No.1 seeding but it wasted the 28 point effort by behemoth Junmar Fajardo. UC will be enjoying a twice to beat advantage over the 4th seeded University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.

The scores

SWU (71) – Guillena 20, Pacquiao 20, Aboude 12, Armecin 9, Nalos 4, Ortuyo 3, Arong 2
