UAAP approves the “Jerry Pingoy Rule”

11 Mar

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board by a vote of 5-2 has approved a new rule that will somehow hinder star players from their respective high school programs from transferring to a competing UAAP college program.   The new rule could be dubbed as the Jerie Pingoy rule after the supposed transfer of the Cebuano basketball star from Far Eastern University (FEU) to the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).  The Jerie Pingoy Rule states that a player from a rival UAAP program will have to sit out for 2 years before he can don the colors of his new school in the UAAP Senior’s Basketball tournament.  Should Pingoy transfer to the ADMU Blue Eagles, we can only see him play in the 2015 UAAP tournament.  If he remains in FEU, he can play in 77th season of UAAP, which starts in July 2013.

The UAAP board almost unanimously approved the new rule with only the teams from Katipunan (University of the Philippines and ADMU) voting against it.  The rule also extended the redshirt period of foreigners who want to play in the country’s premier collegiate basketball league from 1 year to 2 years.  Among the affected would be former Southwestern University (SWU) sensation Benoit Mbala who transferred to the De la Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers this past season.  Mbala had Manila schools salivating for his services when he spearheaded the campaign of the SWU Cobras in the Champion’s League Final 4.

The UAAP Season 75 Senior’s Basketball has no winless team left after the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons routed the University of the East Red Warriors.  The win caused a logjam for the 6th-8th places.  UP, UE, and Adamson University Soaring Falcons all tot a 1-6 record.

For the first time in many years, UP held the lead from the 1st quarter till the end of the match.  All 12 players tapped by Maroons Coach Ricky Dandan scored at least a point.  It was a total team effort for a team that is learning how to win after several near-wins against some of toughest teams of the season like DLSU and Ateneo.  UP boasts of one of the most experienced groups in this year’s competition as 8 of its players are in their final year of playing at the UAAP. The Fighting Maroons were, however, led by a 16 year old Freshman from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in this game.  Former Energen U-16 mainstay Renzar Henry Asilum scored 14 points along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. He was able to somehow negate the efforts of the explosive Roi Sumang of UE who finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Asilum was backstopped by Mark Lopez who had 10 markers, 8 boards, 4 dishes, 2 thefts, and 1 blocked shot. UP was able to dominate the rebound battle with a +10 margin (48-38).  They also had a 23-6 advantage on assists while causing 21 TOs and making 10 steals.  UP was able to limit their turnovers to just 11 in the game.

The next game for both teams will be on August 25 with UP battling Ateneo and UE facing DLSU.

Cebu Live 8 Questions with Jerie Pingoy

FEU-Diliman’s Jerie Marlon Pingoy (courtesy of sis Kath)

Cebu Live had an opportunity to ask 8 questions to one of the best high school basketball players in the country right now.  Cebuano Jerie Marlon Pingoy is the reigning MVP of the UAAP Jr. basketball tournament. His team the FEU-Diliman Baby Tamaraws is currently on top of the standings of Season 75 along with NU Bullpups with similar 6-0 slates. Pingoy is the son of namesake Jerry Pingoy who played in the PBA for Great Taste and Tanduay.  The younger Pingoy is now in Mongolia with the rest of the Energen Pilipinas U-18 team that will play in the 22nd FIBA-Asia U-18 Championships.  Here are his answers to the 8 questions of this blog:

Cebu Live: “What is the difference with your UAAP Jrs. to your Cebu High School league?”
JMP: “It’s very different kay mas daku ni na liga ang UAAP and all the teams kay di basta-basta.” (It’s very different because UAAP is way bigger league than what I am used to and all the teams are strong.)

Cebu Live: “Who is your basketball idol growing up? Local and NBA.”
JMP: “Allen Iverson for the NBA and my father for local.”
Cebu Live: “Whose game are you trying to pattern?”
JMP: “Aside from my father, I’m trying to follow Isaiah Thomas‘ playing style.”
Cebu Live: “How far do you think the Baby Tamaraws go this season?”
JMP: “We are taking it one game at a time and hopefully, we can reach the finals.”
Cebu Live: “What do you miss most about Cebu?”
JMP: “Ay daghan. haha. Especially pagkaon sa Pasil ug pungko-pungko sa Lahug. And of course, my family and friends.” ( Many. Haha. Especially the food in Pasil and “the pungko-pungko” in Lahug. . And of course, my family and friends.)
Ginabot, Ngohiong, etc.

Pungko-Pungko de Cebu ;)

Cebu Live: “How tall are you now?”
JMP: “5’9″
Cebu Live: “Which Brangay did you live in Cebu?”
JMP: “Apas and Pasil”
Cebu Live: “What school did you play for while in Cebu?”
JMP: “I started playing varsity basketball only when I entered high school. I played one year for University of Cebu before moving to FEU”
The true-blue Cebuano could be the next star that will follow of the footsteps of Cebuano guards who succeeded in the Philippine Basketball Association like Boy Cabahug, Al Solis, and Don-Don Hontiveros.  By the end of this year’s basketball season, he will be one of the most sought after recruits in college ranks.  Cebu Live prays for his continued development and success.  This blog will always be a big fan.

2012 UAAP: Efficient Sumalinog instrumental in quelling Maroon rally

Leading by only 3 at 67-64 in the fourth period after 3-pointers from UP’s Mark Lopez and Mike Gamboa, Ateneo turned to Sumalinog for the needed boost in scoring.  The Cebuano responded by scoring 5 in a 7-0 run that brought the lead to a safe ten points, 74-64, with only 2:30 left to play. Sumalinog who is usually used by coach Norman Black as a defensive stopper hit 2 0f his 3 attempts from long distance while the rest of the Blue Eagle squad went  0 for 7 for the afternoon.

It was a stark contrast to the lethargic starts of UP in their previous 3 games. UP held a 40-32 lead at the half-time break. The break, however, was just what Ateneo needed to wake up from their offensive slumber as they outscored their Katipunan neighbors 29-17 in the crucial 3rd period and took the lead for good.

Nico Salva was the game’s top scorer as he managed to get 21 markers.   Former University of the Visayas Green Lancer Greg Slaughter finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Mark Lopez, Alvin Padilla, and Mike Gamboa scored in double figures for the Maroon five. Former Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu and RP U-16 member Henry Asilum started for UP and finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.  He was 2 for 2 beyond the arc but he missed all of his five 2-point shot attempts.

With the win Ateneo moved to 4-1 while UP sank to 0-4.

The Blue Eagles led 20-8 after the first quarter with Ravena matching La Salle’s score with 8 points of his own. LA Revilla led a 16-10 rally to trim the lead half, 24-30, with less than 4 minutes left at the half.  Ateneo, however, made a 7-2 run capped by a lay up by Slaughter at the buzzer for 9 point lead at the half.

2012 UAAP Basketball: Another magical escape by Bert Flores-coached FEU

22 Jul

For the second straight game, the Far Eastern University (FEUTamaraws used its veteran savvy to somehow come out with a victory over a very capable opponent in the men’s basketball tournament of the 75th season of the UAAP. FEU added the DLSU Green Archers to its list of early victims a week after stealing a win from the UST Growling Tigers.

It was a 40 minute defensive battle between two undefeated teams. FEU lead after the first 10 minutes by 4, only to end up with a 3 point deficit at the halftime break. The Tamaraws somehow recovered in the 3rd canto to lead by a single point going into the final 10 minutes of action.  In the 4th period, La Salle took at 44-42 lead with less than 3 minutes left.

Carl Cruz hit a jumper to knot the score at 44-all.  In the next possession, the Archers missed a 3-point attempt and Anthony Hargrove was fouled in the battle for the rebound.  The FEU big man split his charities to give a slim 45-44 lead to FEU.  DLSU took back the lead after Norberto Torres made 2 free throws after being fouled by Cruz. Season 73 MVP RR Garcia tied the ballgame at 46 after just hitting 1 of 2 free throws after a foul by Cebuano cager Mark Jayven Tallo.  With 1:27 left, Almond Vosotros lost the ball to the sidelines to give FEU an opportunity to grab the lead.  The Tamaraws did not disappoint its faithful fans as they capitalized on the turnover courtesy of a mid-range shot by Mike Tolomia over the outstretched hands of rookie Jeron Teng. With La Salle trailing 46-48, Teng missed with 35 seconds left in the game. FEU tried to milk the clock and with less than 15 seconds left, Terence Romeo shot an airball but the rebound went to ex-Green Archer Arvie Bringas who was fouled with only 0.9 seconds left in the Tamaraw‘s shot clock.  Bringas, however, missed both of us free throws to give DLSU a final chance to tie or win the game with 12 seconds left.  The ball ended up in the hands of rookie point guard Tallo who was hounded by 3 Tamaraw defenders and was only able to give the ball up to Vosotros with around 2 seconds left. The desperation attempt of Vosotros bounced off the rim to end the game 48-46 in favor of the FEU Tamaraws (2-0).

Only one player scored in double figures in the low scoring encounter. Terence Romeo scored 10 points to be voted as the best player of the game. La Salle scoring were led by 4 players who scored 8 points each. The game had 12 lead changes and the final one settled the winner of the game.  Former UC Baby Webmaster Roger Pogoy had 6 points in the game. Former CIT/CEC high school star Tallo got substantial minutes in the game due to the absence of regular starter LA Revilla due to tendonitis, he scored the first 4 points of his UAAP career. Tallo was a controversial acquisition last year of La Salle after playing in the pre-season for rivals Ateneo. Cebu-native Jarelan Tampus had 2 points for the Archers.

During the post-game interview, Cebuano coach Bert Flores of FEU credited La Salle for their very suffocating defensive game plan.  He said in Filipino that he had a hard time trying to adjust La Salle’s traps but he trusted his wards’ ability in isolation plays.  In the final minute, he dialed Tolomia’s number to attack DLSU’s defense. Flores intimated that he felt that the rookie Jeron Teng was DLSU’s weakest link on defense.  The gamble paid off as Tolomia hit the game-winner against Teng.  With the win, FEU has grabbed the lead in the standings from the erstwhile leader DLSU(2-1).

The scores:

FEU (48) – Romeo 10, Tolomia 7, Hargrove 7, Pogoy 6, Garcia 6, A. Bringas 5, Cruz 4, Belo 3, Mendoza 0, Escoto 0, M. Bringas 0.

La Salle (46) – Andrada 8, Vosotros 8, Medoza 8, N. Torres 8, Teng 6, Tallo 4, Van Opstal 2, Tampus 2, T. Torres 0, Webb 0, Manguera 0.

Quarterscores: 15-11, 23-26, 35-34, 48-46.

Asilum debuts for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons

Former Ateneo de Cebu-Sacred Heart School Magis Eagles stalwart Renzar Henry Asilum contributed 12 points in UP’s upset bid against DLSU in the 75th season of the UAAP.   It was Asilum’s first game in the country’s premier collegiate league and his team almost started the season with a big win. UP fell short, however, 73-68.

The UP Fighting Maroons went toe to toe against the DLSU Green Archers in the first quarter as they only trailed by 1 point after the first ten minutes of action. DLSU asserted its dominance in the middle quarters as they lead 56-40 going to the final minutes of the 3rd quarter.  With La Salle fans thinking that the Archers will stroll for their first win, UP had other plans as they made a valiant 15-2 run to cut the lead to just 3 points at 55-58.  The rally was single-handedly quelled by freshman Jeron Teng who scored on back to back baskets to put some distance between the two teams.

The Fighting Maroons made their final run with few minutes left in the game as they held the Green Archers scoreless for almost 3 minutes while uncorking a 9-0 blast to grab the lead at 68-67 with 44 seconds left. In the next play, point guard LA Revilla drew a couple of defenders before passing off to Teng who attacked the basket and converting a 3-point play to give back the lead to La Salle at 70-68. UP failed to score for the rest of the game as La Salle padded the score when UP was forced to foul.

Fil-Canadian Norbert Torres led DLSU with 16pts, 14rebs, 3asts, 3blks, 1stl.  Teng and Revilla combined for 30 points.  UP was led by the 18pts, 5rebs, 2 treys, 1ast, 1stl, 1blk performance of Mike Silungan and the dozen points of freshman Asilum. Cebuano Mark Jayven Tallo was scoreless in his debut with La Salle. Tallo was supposed to play for Ateneo last year but he left the team and transferred to Ateneo’s main rival.
