Cesafi finals: UC 1win away from back to back titles; High school series tied

1 Nov

Cebu Colisuem – The University of Cebu Webmasters are one win away from capturing its second consecutive Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) college basketball crown. After taking Game 1 87-84, the UC Webmasters needed overtime to down the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras , 91-84, in Game 2 of their best of five series.

The game was very close between the two evenly-matched finalists. The defending champions UC controlled the first 3 quarters before the Yayoy Alcoseba-mentored SWU made daring 15-4 run to grab the lead, 68-66, with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Big man June Mar Fajardo knotted the game at 68-all but Cobra’s Joseph Nalos responded with a one-man 5-0 blitz to lead SWU to 73-68 lead. UC’s Luigi Bercede and SWU’s Rene Pacquiao exchanged twinners for 75-70 score. UC then scored the last 5 points in regulation. The last came from Bercede who was in the charity stripe with a chance to win the game if he made both of his free throws but he only made one to extend game for another 5 minutes.

UC started the overtime with a 6-0 run behind the efforts of Fajardo and Robinson Mohammad. The fouling out of 6-6 center Justin Aboude made matters worse for the Cobras as UC took advantage and built a 10-point spread with less than a minute left in overtime. UC just let the clock run out for their second straight victory in the finals series.

High school series tied

The University of the Visayas Baby Lancers seemed to be determined to make sure that a basketball title will be awarded to their school this year as they upended last year’s runner-up Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles ,81-56, in Game 2 of the high school finals series. The 25-point rout avenged UV’s 82-94 loss in the opening game of their best of five series.

The Magis Eagles actually started very strong in Game 2 as they took a 22-12 after the first ten minutes of play. UV, however, owned the second period as they  outscored and out hustled SHS-AdC 30-11 for a 42-33 halftime lead. The onslaught continued in the 3rd period as the Baby Lancers extended the lead to 19 before coasting in the 4th period and settling for an emphatic 25-point victory.

One of the keys of the game was UV’s defense that held burly Julius Cadavis to just 5 points. UV also spoiled the return of Energen Pilipinas Under 16 youth team member Renzar Henry Asilum, who just scored 2 points in the game.

Andres Desiderio and Ron Dennison led UV with 19 and 16 points , respectively, while Patrick Go had 16 points for the Magis Eagles.

3rd Placers

The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers drubbed dethroned champs Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons for third place in the high school division. The third placing in college was earned by the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors after beating the UV Green Lancers.

CESAFI Basketball: SWU ousts UV

27 Oct

For the first time in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Basketball tournament history, the University of the Visayas Green Lancers will not be participating in the finals. UV won the first 9 basketball championships of the CESAFI and last year was the first time that another school hoisted the crown. The slide continues as the Green Lancers failed to beat the Sotuhwestern University (SWU) Cobras in their do or die semifinal battle. With the victory, SWU earned the right to face the defending champions University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in the 11th CESAFI finals.

The SWU Cobras mentored by legendary Cebuano coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba is seeking its first ever Cesafi title. Their match against the Green Lancer’s was one-sided but hotly contested and highly emotional. Several players were ejected including UV coach Donbel Belano. The game ended with the score of 74-53 in the Cobras favor. The game was actually cut short by Commissioner Felix Tiukonhoy with 54.9 left on the clock.

Suspensions are given to UV’s Edrian Lao, Phil Mercader, John Abad and Rene Saycon and coach Belano. UV team manager Sam-Sam Gullas apologized on behalf of his team and he informed the media that the 4 players will not play in their series against the USC Warriors.

A new era has began in Cebu college basketball, UV ended a streak of ten straight finals appearances and it is not surprising for some players and fans to get emotional. Hopefully, the Green Lancers will learn from defeat and start getting hungry again.

As for the finalists, it is a very intriguing match-up as the Top 2 teams after the elimination will be facing off for the crown. Will Junmar Fajardo end his college career with a title? Will the boys of Coach Yayoy Alcoseba spoil the UC farewell party? We will know soon as more drama unfolds at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win clinched the second seed for them and the twice to beat advantage in the semifinals.

There were many heroes in their latest win against UC. Rene Pacquiao made a jumper to tie the game at 68-all. 2011Cesafi: UC beats SWU for 3rd straight win

26 Aug

Cebu Coliseum- Back from a very tough Universaide campaign, the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters showed that they are still the kings of Cebu college basketball by beating the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras, 76-72, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament.

The Webmasters were leading early in the game and even had double digit lead advantages throughout the first half and third quarter. They seem to be bent on venting all their frustrations of their forgettable campaign in Shenzen, China on the Cobra team that recently beat powerhouse UV Green Lancers. UC lead 42-28 early in the 3rd canto as SWU suddenly found their groove and unleashed a 26-13 run to cut the lead into a solitary point 55-54.

The final period was a nip and tuck affair as the game was tied 72-all with less than a minute left with a shot from SWU center Justin Aboude. UC’s Gerald Ampoon answered with a clutch jumper with 48 seconds left for a 74-72 lead. SWU missed a three-point attempt in the next possession then big man Junmar Fajardo ended the scoring with a post move for the final tally.

It was another tough loss for the Cobras who also crumbled at crunchtime during their 2 other losses. The win is a good tune-up for UC as they will battle rivals UV Green Lancers tomorrow.

The scores

UC (76) – Fajardo 23, Bercede 12, Ampoon 11, Mohammad 11, Heruela 7, Pao 4, Aranas 3, Auditor 3, Caytuna 2

2011 CESAFI opens

8 Aug

Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI), the premier inter-school athletic association in Cebu, opened its 11th season last Saturday. The theme for this year is “Reviving ecology through sports and academic excellence”.

Just like any other season or any other league in the country, the biggest event in these games will be basketball which still the number one sport in the country. Last year was the first time that University of the Visayas Green (UV) Lancers fail to capture the collegiate crown. They were dethroned by the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters led by Junmar Fajardo. The defeat cost the job of UV coach Elmer “Boy” Cabahug who is replaced by former Lancers star Felix Belano. This year also marks the return of multi-titled Coach Yayoy Alcoseba to coaching in college basketball. He will be at the helm of the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras.

Last year’s high school competition was highlighted by the Cinderella story of the CEC Dragons. After finishing dead last in 2009, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons became the 2010 champions.

Intense competition is expected this year and Cebuanos can look forward  to an exciting CESAFI season.

Results of the opening games

As the first offering of the season, the defending high school champions CEC Dragons faced the UV Baby Lancers. The Baby Lancers came from behind to stun the Dragons 62-47. UV came back from a 25-35 in the 3rd quarter to turn the game into a blowout in their favor.  Reeve Ugsang, Joseph Peralta, and Ron Marvis Dennison combined for 38 points to pace the Baby Lancers. CEC’s effort was led by James Neil Sumayang who had 14 markers.

In the main game, the UC Webmasters started sluggishly their title defense as they needed extra-time to beat the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) Jaguars 95-87. The Jaguars led at half-time 40-35 before UC settled down to take the lead.  UC still lead by 4, 86-90 with only 32 seconds left. Jaguar’s Jose Tabaloc scored to cut the lead in half and in the next possession, Gerald Ampoon turned the ball over to give back the ball to USJ-R. USJ-R Rookie James Regalado sent the game into overtime after he made a follow-up off a teammate’s miss with only 1.8 seconds left in the game. It was a different in overtime, when UC’s veteran simply took over to outscore USJ-R 15-7 and grabbed their first win of the season.

Junmar Fajardo led UC with 31 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and two steals. He was ably supported by Krist Edward Pao (16 points), Jan Auditor (14) and Luigi Bercede (12). Point Guard Medget de la Rama (20), James Regalado (15), and Abulaiz Suliman (15) were the scoring leaders of the Jaguars.

UC’s Junmar Fajardo targeted to lead ABL campaign

8 Jul
ASEAN Basketball League

Cebuano behemoth Junmar Fajardo has committed to play for the University of Cebu Webmasters until December of this year. He will finish the CESAFI season and would probably spearhead UC’s campaign in the Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League (PCCL). After that, he can pursue his lifelong dram of becoming a professional basketball players.  It also means that he will not be entering the 2011 PBA Draft.

These developments made him an attractive target for San Miguel Corporation who will be fielding a team in the next season of the Asean Basketball League (ABL).   The SMC team will be the country’s second entry to the 2 year old league after Mikee Romero’s Harbour Center Team.  The team will be coached by legendary import Bobby Parks and they are planning to form a team composed of PBA free agents and reserves.  If negotiations are successful, Fajardo will be the centerpiece of the team.

Junmar Fajardo has dominated the Cebu college leagues for years already and he is ready to take on bigger challenges on and off the court.  A successful ABL campaign could lead him to become the top pick of the 2012 PBA draft barring the entry of Smart-Gilas players. There is also a possibility that he might be recruited to play for the Gilas instead. The future is looking bright indeed for this baller from Pinamungahan.

UC makes it to the PCCL Final 4

19 Nov

The University of Cebu Webmasters led by big man Junmar Fajardo ambushed the USC Warriors 83-67 in their Elite Eight match-up of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) at the New Cebu Coliseum yesterday. The 6-10 Fajardo dominated the shaded lane and ended up scoring 30 points along with 20 rebounds. He will be bringing his act to Manila as he will try to lead UC in its battles against the powerhouses of the UAAP and NCAA.

In the first game, Reil Cervantes leads the Far Eastern University to a victory over the JRU Heavy Bombers 64-60 in their Sweet 16 match.

UPDATE: ADMU beats UC in the Final 4

caloycomment: I hope Junmar Fajardo and UC will show that Cebu college basketball has what it takes to compete against the big boys of Manila. Congratulations and Good luck!!!
