Former Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagle Julius Cadavis scored 11 to be among the four Arellano Chiefs players who scored in double figures in their upset victory over the Collegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, 77-67. The victory was the first win for Arellano in four tries this season.  The Koy Banal-mentored squad is out of the cellar with a 1-3 record.

The Chiefs waxed hot early in the game as they lead in double figures most of the first half which ended 39-28.  The game was very physical resulting to ejections to two Letran players. Knight’s team captain Jam Cortes was ejected in the second quarter after throwing an elbow in a rebound play. Jonathan Belorio followed him to the showers after committing his second flagrant foul with 5 minutes left in the 3rd period. The loss of the two players made it difficult for coach Joel Banal to find the right combination to rally from the large deficit.

In the 4th quarter, the Knights launched a last ditch rally to cut Arellano’s lead down to two at 64-66.  The Chiefs responded with an 11-0 run behind Fil-Canadian James Forrester and Rocky Acidre to pull away.  Forrester top scored for the Chiefs with 18. Kevin Alas had 22 points for the Knights who suffered their second straight loss after an opening win over San Sebastian.

The Scores:

Arellano (77) — Forrester 18, Bangga 13, Cadavis 11, Pinto 10, Acidre 9, Zulueta 7, Caperal 5, Salcedo 2, Valera 2, Hernandez 0.

Cebuanos in the UAAP: Cebuano Asilum to play for the UP Fighting Maroons

19 Mar

UP Fighting Maroons logo

If the twitter exchanges are true, it looks like Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu guard Renzar Henry Asilum will be donning the UP Fighting Maroons jersey in the 75th UAAP season. Asilum was a vital cog in the Energen Pilipinas Under-16 Youth Team that ruled SEABA U16 and placed 4th in the FIBA Asia U16 competitions last year. Asilum played for the national team even though his school was also fighting for the top place in CESAFI high school basketball tournament. Other Energen standouts were not able to join the FIBA Asia tournament due to school commitments.

The addition of Asilum to the UP Maroons line-up will give coach Manny Dandan another reliable guard to call upon. UP will have many returning players who missed season 74 like Mark Lopez and Mikee Reyes. Henry Asilum was vital piece in the guard rotation of the Under 16 team. It would be interesting to see how to Cebuano guard will perform in the premier collegiate basketball league in the country.

Cesafi finals: UC 1win away from back to back titles; High school series tied

1 Nov

Cebu Colisuem – The University of Cebu Webmasters are one win away from capturing its second consecutive Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) college basketball crown. After taking Game 1 87-84, the UC Webmasters needed overtime to down the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras , 91-84, in Game 2 of their best of five series.

The game was very close between the two evenly-matched finalists. The defending champions UC controlled the first 3 quarters before the Yayoy Alcoseba-mentored SWU made daring 15-4 run to grab the lead, 68-66, with less than 5 minutes left in the game. Big man June Mar Fajardo knotted the game at 68-all but Cobra’s Joseph Nalos responded with a one-man 5-0 blitz to lead SWU to 73-68 lead. UC’s Luigi Bercede and SWU’s Rene Pacquiao exchanged twinners for 75-70 score. UC then scored the last 5 points in regulation. The last came from Bercede who was in the charity stripe with a chance to win the game if he made both of his free throws but he only made one to extend game for another 5 minutes.

UC started the overtime with a 6-0 run behind the efforts of Fajardo and Robinson Mohammad. The fouling out of 6-6 center Justin Aboude made matters worse for the Cobras as UC took advantage and built a 10-point spread with less than a minute left in overtime. UC just let the clock run out for their second straight victory in the finals series.

High school series tied

The University of the Visayas Baby Lancers seemed to be determined to make sure that a basketball title will be awarded to their school this year as they upended last year’s runner-up Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles ,81-56, in Game 2 of the high school finals series. The 25-point rout avenged UV’s 82-94 loss in the opening game of their best of five series.

The Magis Eagles actually started very strong in Game 2 as they took a 22-12 after the first ten minutes of play. UV, however, owned the second period as they  outscored and out hustled SHS-AdC 30-11 for a 42-33 halftime lead. The onslaught continued in the 3rd period as the Baby Lancers extended the lead to 19 before coasting in the 4th period and settling for an emphatic 25-point victory.

One of the keys of the game was UV’s defense that held burly Julius Cadavis to just 5 points. UV also spoiled the return of Energen Pilipinas Under 16 youth team member Renzar Henry Asilum, who just scored 2 points in the game.

Andres Desiderio and Ron Dennison led UV with 19 and 16 points , respectively, while Patrick Go had 16 points for the Magis Eagles.

Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu

Last year’s championship protagonists played recently a crucial match that has a lot bearing for the Final 4 rankings in the junior’s division of the 11th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball season. Last year’s runner-up Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) MAgi Eagles won over 2010 Champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 82-81, in double overtime.

The game needed more than 40 minutes to settle who is the better team and who will grab one of the top slots in this years semifinals. The win improved the Magis Eagles’ record to 13-2 while dropping the Dragon to 3rd place with a 12-4 record.

4th Quarter

The game is tied at 61-all with 42.9 seconds in the clock. CEC main man James Sumayang is on the line for two charities and he made both to give the lead to the Dragons 63-61. The Magis Eagles tried to take the lead when RP Youth team member Henry Asilum attempted a 3-point shot. He missed but big man Dawn Ochea was there to grab the offensive rebound. CEC was forced to foul. With 30.5 seconds left, Ochea was only able to hit 1 of 2 free throws reducing the deficit to 1 at 62-63. The Dragons milked the clock before Sumayang attempted a basket before the shot clock buzzer sounded.   The ball fell to Julius Cadavis of SHS-AdC who was fouled. Cadavis had a chance to give the lead for the Magis Eagles but he was able to hit only one free throw to tie the game 63-all. The game went to overtime.

1st Overtime

With 10.6 seconds left, the SHS-AdC held a slim 70-68 lead. CEC was forced to foul Patrick Go to stop the clock. Go missed both free throws to give the possessionand a chance to tie or take the lead  to the Dragons . Asilum though had other plans as he stole the ball from Luther Huevos prompting CEC to foul and prevent Sacred Heart from wasting more seconds. With 3.1 seconds left, Asilum splits his charities to give the Magis Eagles some breathing room at 71-68. In the ensuing possession, Alfred Sedillo hit a magical buzzer-beating three point shot to extend the game for another 5 minutes.

2nd Overtime

Alfred Sedillo hit a booming 3-pointer to give CEC the lead 81-78 with 1:30 left.  Cadavis responded with a field goal to cut the lead to 1 with a little over 1 minute left in the game. After some scoreless plays, Cadavis was on the line with 10.7 seconds left after being fouled by CEC. He redeemed himself after missing a free throw that could have sealed the game in regulation by hitting both free throws and getting the lead for the Magis Eagles, 82-81. In the final play, SHS-AdC locked down on defense as they prevented CEC to make a decent attempt to the basket. Top scorer James Sumayang was unable to get off a shot as he was forced to issue a pass to Sedillo as time expired.

Sumayang finished with 36 point in a losing cause. He was backed up by 19 points from dead-eye Sedillo. The Magi Eagles were led by Cadavis’ 25 markers and Ochea’s 19. Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu will wrap up their elimination assignments against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars on Thursday.
