Asilum debuts for the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons

Former Ateneo de Cebu-Sacred Heart School Magis Eagles stalwart Renzar Henry Asilum contributed 12 points in UP’s upset bid against DLSU in the 75th season of the UAAP.   It was Asilum’s first game in the country’s premier collegiate league and his team almost started the season with a big win. UP fell short, however, 73-68.

The UP Fighting Maroons went toe to toe against the DLSU Green Archers in the first quarter as they only trailed by 1 point after the first ten minutes of action. DLSU asserted its dominance in the middle quarters as they lead 56-40 going to the final minutes of the 3rd quarter.  With La Salle fans thinking that the Archers will stroll for their first win, UP had other plans as they made a valiant 15-2 run to cut the lead to just 3 points at 55-58.  The rally was single-handedly quelled by freshman Jeron Teng who scored on back to back baskets to put some distance between the two teams.

The Fighting Maroons made their final run with few minutes left in the game as they held the Green Archers scoreless for almost 3 minutes while uncorking a 9-0 blast to grab the lead at 68-67 with 44 seconds left. In the next play, point guard LA Revilla drew a couple of defenders before passing off to Teng who attacked the basket and converting a 3-point play to give back the lead to La Salle at 70-68. UP failed to score for the rest of the game as La Salle padded the score when UP was forced to foul.

Fil-Canadian Norbert Torres led DLSU with 16pts, 14rebs, 3asts, 3blks, 1stl.  Teng and Revilla combined for 30 points.  UP was led by the 18pts, 5rebs, 2 treys, 1ast, 1stl, 1blk performance of Mike Silungan and the dozen points of freshman Asilum. Cebuano Mark Jayven Tallo was scoreless in his debut with La Salle. Tallo was supposed to play for Ateneo last year but he left the team and transferred to Ateneo’s main rival.

DLSU joins ADMU, NU, and FEU at the top of the standing with a 1-0 record. They will face the UE Red Warriors on the main game this Thursday while UP’s next assignment will be against the UST Growling Tigers on Saturday.

UAAP 74: Slaughter limited but Ateneo still wins

16 Jul

Way back when Slaughter was a Green Lancer (pages.ph)

Former UV Green Lancer Greg Slaughter got his first taste of the most celebrated basketball rivalry in the country as his Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles battled De la Salle University Green Archers. The Green Archers concentrated their defense on Slaughter who exploded with 23 points in his UAAP debut against the Adamson Univesity Soaring Falcons. The defense of DLSU opened up opportunities for Slaughter’s teammates to score.

The game became the coming out party of freshman phenom Kiefer Ravena, who bannered the Blue Eaglets last year. The young Ravena scored 22 points in the first half to tow ADMU to an 11-point first half lead.  He finished the game with 24 points,  10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 big steals.

Greg Slaughter finished with 7 points (3-4 FG),  6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. His defense was a big factor in Ateneo’s 81-72 victory as he changed countless attempts of DLSU.  Green Archers Center Norbert Torres only made 3 out of his 16 field goal attempts.

With the victory, Ateneo is now 2-0 while rivals La Salle is 0-2.  Next up for Ateneo will be the National University Bulldogs on Thursday.  It will be exciting to see how the Eagles match up with the Bulldogs (0-1) that boast of another marquee newcomer in Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. and big man Emmanuel Mbe.
