Provincial Board Member Thadeo Ouano has formally informed Governor Gwendolyn Garcia about his move to the ruling Liberal Party.  His affiliation to President Aquino’s party signaled the start of a super coalition in Mandaue. PB Ouano will now be allied to Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes and Congressman Luigi Quisumbing. His daughter Mandaue City Councilor Emmarie “Lollipop” Ouano-Dizon joined LP earlier this year.

The Liberal Party now practically controls the 6th district and the new development will give the gubernatorial slate of Hilario Davide III and Vice-governor Agnes Magpale a strong organizational advantage in the vote rich district. The One Cebu Party has not yet announced who will lead their local slate in the area next year.

PB Thadeo Ouano said he will still be supporting the senate aspirations of the governor, who has been his ally for many years. His main reason of moving to Liberal Party is to keep his family united as his daughter is part of LP and his father longtime mayor Alfredo Ouano wanted him to move to LP.

Mandaue Politics: Mayor Cortes hires ex-Congresswoman Ruiz as Consultant

It looks like that there will be a super united Mandaue in the May 2013 elections. Current Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortes added the candidate he defeated in the May 2010 elections as a possible ally in the next elections.  Mayor Cortes had forged an alliance with the Ouanos a few months back and he set to run unopposed in next year’s polls.

Former Cebu 6th district Representative Nerissa Soon-Ruiz has been hired by the mayor to help implement the city’s health program called “I Care Program”.  The programs aims to improve the public health program to the barangay level with a special focus on child care.   If Ruiz accepts the appointment she will receive P18,000 a month.

Dr. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz is a Certified Family Physician and has a masteral degree in Public Health from UP Cebu.

Mandaue Senior Citizens get cash aid

Mandaue City has started to distribute the 1,000 peso cash assistance  for the elderly.  The city plans to release another 1,000 pesos in December.  Councilor Jefferson Ceniza, chairman of the committee on social services, said that financial aid could increase depending on the availability of funds. The release of funds at the barangay halls started yesterday and will continue until friday. There will be around 12,000 beneficiaries of the program. The administration of Mayor Jonas Cortes has not been neglecting the elderly sector as they established an office for the senior citizen headed by Nedy Sienes and provided a service vehicle for the senior citizens.  Senior citizen residents of Mandaue City receive a 50% discount if hospitalized in the Mandaue City Hospital.

There is a new branch of Jollibee in Cebu. The newest Jollibee store is located at ParkMall in North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City. The store opened earlier today. Their opening promo includes free umbrella for every order of a bucket meal and also a chance to win a FREE Kiddie Party for every receipt worth 150 pesos.

Kan-anan: Matias Barbecue

One of the favorite barbecue places in Cebu is Matias Barbecue in A.S. Fortuna St., Mandaue City. You will not miss the place as it is packed with cars during lunch or dinner time. Matias is famous for its chicken and pork barbecue. They also serve parts like gizzards, and liver. They also balbacua, liempo, and local viands. The grilled goodies goes so well with puso (hanging rice).

The main reason why people flock here is that the food is really tasty at very affordable prices. I see many balikbayans make sure to eat at Matias every time they visit Cebu. You should try it and tell us what you think. ;)

Directions: If coming from Foodland (Banilad area), the food spot is located at the right side before reaching the traffic light at the corner of Hernan Cortez Street.

Floods hit Cebu and Mandaue Friday; More rains to come

After a heavy downpour last friday, several areas in Cebu and Mandaue were submerged in water. The roads along Mahiga creek had knee-deep floods and several subdivisions in Banilad and Kasambagan areas experienced flooding. In Mandue 11 barangays were flooded.

The Mandaue City Risk Reduction and Disaster Management Council (CRRDMC), led by Mayor Jonas Cortes, wants the City Council to declare a state of calamity. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the heavy rains brought by the La Niña phenomenom will last until 2012.

Another low pressure area is expected to enter the country in 1 to 2 days. It will be named Ramon once it is in the Philippine waters. It is expected to affect the Visayas and Souther Luzon areas.

Fun Run: ERUF 161 RUN

The Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) will host a fun run tomorrow dubbed as “ERUF 161 Run”. ERUF has been Cebu‘s version of Rescue 911.  The foundation has saved thousands of lives in responding to emergencies in Cebu for 25 years now. They have also gone to nearby provinces like Leyte to help during calamities.

The proceeds of the fun will fund the purchase of a portable defibrillator, a device that is used to revive people having cardiac arrest. The fun run will be held at Mandaue City Reclamation area across Parkmall. It has 3 events: 12K, 6K, and 3K. The run will start at 5:30 a.m.

The top runners for each category will be given prizes while special awards will be handed out to the oldest and youngest runner as well as the runner with the best costume.

The Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) is an SEC registered NGO. It was founded in 1986. There will be a dinner tomorrow at the Foundation’s headquarters in Banilad to celebrate the momentous milestone of reaching 25 years of service to the Cebuano public.

Football is Alive in Cebu

Football has been one of the sports that have been gaining popularity in the country in the recent months.  This is mainly due to the performance of the Azkals in international competitions. Cebu has a very active program for its schools and football clubs. Corporate sponsors like Aboitiz have organized tournaments all year round. Last weekend, I witnessed a tournament in San Roque Football Field which is very near our house.
I was very impressed with the kids and the other participants. Some were even playing past 11 am. It was hot yet the energy level is there and the crowd was enjoying the games. The tournament has many levels and there are games for as young as elementary age to people over 38 years old.
Football is indeed alive in Cebu and it has been alive for years. When I was in high school a few years back, my school was competing in the Coke Go for Goal. It was a national competition that has a city and regional elimination rounds. It was a great program and hopefully somebody would be willing to revive a national football tournament for high school or elementary players.
I do not know why is there no national football tournament for the youth when school interest and participation is at an all-time high. Before, I see my friends playing in empty fields. Now, tournaments are packed like what I witnessed this weekend in San Roque Football Field.  Basketball has Milo BEST, who can take the cudgels for football?
