UAAP approves the “Jerry Pingoy Rule”

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board by a vote of 5-2 has approved a new rule that will somehow hinder star players from their respective high school programs from transferring to a competing UAAP college program.   The new rule could be dubbed as the Jerie Pingoy rule after the supposed transfer of the Cebuano basketball star from Far Eastern University (FEU) to the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).  The Jerie Pingoy Rule states that a player from a rival UAAP program will have to sit out for 2 years before he can don the colors of his new school in the UAAP Senior’s Basketball tournament.  Should Pingoy transfer to the ADMU Blue Eagles, we can only see him play in the 2015 UAAP tournament.  If he remains in FEU, he can play in 77th season of UAAP, which starts in July 2013.

The UAAP board almost unanimously approved the new rule with only the teams from Katipunan (University of the Philippines and ADMU) voting against it.  The rule also extended the redshirt period of foreigners who want to play in the country’s premier collegiate basketball league from 1 year to 2 years.  Among the affected would be former Southwestern University (SWU) sensation Benoit Mbala who transferred to the De la Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers this past season.  Mbala had Manila schools salivating for his services when he spearheaded the campaign of the SWU Cobras in the Champion’s League Final 4.

Ray Parks and Jerie Pingoy both kept their MVP standing in their respective leagues. Parks lead the NU Bulldogs to the Final 4 while Pingoy won the high school plum with FEU-Diliman. In the Women’s tournament, Allana Lim won the MVP a year after fellow Lady Tam Raiza Palmera won. Lim was part of this year’s champion team and she was a mythical 5 member in season 74.  Greg Slaughter of Ateneo and Aracelie Abaca are the only other players who were able to duplicate as mythical five member from season 74.

Greg Slaughter used to play for the University of Visayas Green Lancers while Jerie Pingoy started playing organized basketball at the University of Cebu.

22nd Fiba-Asia U18 Championships: Pingoy top scorer in PHL’s QF loss; PHL to battle Taipei for 5th

The Philippines has once again fallen to a familiar foe in the knockout stages of an Asian-level basketball tournament.  Call it destiny, call it fate but one again the Philippines got eliminated for medal contention by Korea, 90-77.  The Energen Pilipinas Under-18 Youth Squad played in even terms versus Korea for the first 18 minutes of the game.  They had the lead at 39-38 but Korea ended the first half with a 9-2 run to lead 47-41 and was able to prevent the Philippines from catching up the rest of the way. UAAP Jrs. MVP Jerie Marlon Pingoy and NCAA Jrs. MVP Rey Nambatac  led the losing squad with 19 and 12 points respectively.

In the consolation round, the Philippines hurdled Lebanon ,80-69, to set a match against second round victim Chinese Taipei for 5th place.  Mario Bonleon scored 19 points for the PHL squad that dominated Lebanon in the second half of the game.

22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championships: Energen Pilipinas rallies past Bahrain; Cebuano Pingoy scores 19

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The Energen Pilipinas Under 18 Youth Team overcame an 11-point half-time deficit to beat Bahrain and move to the quarterfinals with a 3-game winning streak.  The win, however, was not enough to propel the Philippines to a higher seeding as Chinese-Taipei surprised Iran to grab the No.2 group ranking by virtue of the tournament’s tie-breaker.  The Philippines, Iran, and Chinese-Taipei had an identical 4-1 record with Iran having the best quotient ranking followed by Chinese-Taipei then the Philippines.

UAAP Jrs. MVP Jerie Marlon Pingoy once again conspired with J-Jay Alejandro as they combined for 20 points in the 3rd quarter to turn the double digit deficit to a 12-point lead.  The Philippines simply overwhelmed Bahrain in the second half to coast to a 99-72 win. Alejandro led the Philippines in scoring with 23 big points. Pingoy had an efficient 19 points behind a 9 for 12 shooting from the field.  Janhubert Cani and Rey Nambtac are the other Filipino boy who reached double figures in scoring with 11 a piece.  Ali Hassan Shukralla and Mohamed Buallay combined for 48 markers for Bahrain.

22nd Fiba Asia Under 18 Championships: Jerie Pingoy scores 25 in PHL’s close victory over Chinese-Taipei

Ulanbaatar, Mongolia –   Cebuano Jerie Marlon Pingoy conspired with U16 Youth Squad holdover and captain Rodolfo “J-Jay” Alejandro in handing a strong Chinese-Taipei squad their first defeat in the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championships.  The two rising stars of Philippine basketball combined for 47 markers to lead the Energen Pilipinas U18 Youth Squad to its second straight win in the second phase of the group stages of the 22nd FIBA Asia Under 18 Championships.

The Philippines controlled the first half.  They led at the end of the first period at 17-14.  They continued their steady onslaught in the 2nd period to have a 9-point cushion at the end of two quarters, 43-34. The third period, however, was controlled by Chinese-Taipei as they were able to outscore the wards of coach Olsen Racela, 30-20, to grab a one point lead going to the final period. The fourth period was a virtual see-saw battle and with the Philippines leading 83-82 with over a minute left, Jerie Pingoy completed a clutch 3-point play to extend the lead to 4, 86-82.  After a split by Lee Chua-ji, Taipei was forced to foul Alejandro who cooly sank his pressure packed free throws for the final count at 88-83.

It was a big win for the Philippines as they could clinch the 2nd seed in Group F if they win their next assignment against Bahrain. Taipei could try to complicate matters in the group as they will try to give powerhouse Iran its first loss in the tournament in their next assignment.

Jerie Pingoy top scored for Energen Pilipinas with 25 points.  The reigning UAAP Junior’s MVP also had 2 rebound, 5 assists, and 1 steal while making 11 of his 15 2-point attempts.  Alejandro had 22 points, 9 rebounds,  and 3 triples.  Rey Nambatac had 10 points with 4 steals. Chinese Taipei was led by Lin Kuan-chun’s 25.

22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championships: Jerie Pingoy is top scorer in PHL’s expected victory over Indonesia; Porter scores 8

Ulanbaatar, Mongolia – SEABA Champions Philippines continued its mastery over fellow Southeast Asian representative Indonesia by handily beating the Indons 88-62 in the second phase of the group matches in the 22nd FIBA-Asia Under 18 Championships for Men.

The Indonesians coached by Filipino Nat Canson exploited a tentative start by the Philippines to lead 12-11 at the 5:00 minute mark of the opening quarter.  The Energen Pilipinas Under Youth squad coached by Olsen Racela responded by outscoring their opponents 12-6 at the second 5 minutes of the first period to lead 23-18 after the first quarter.  The Philippines held Indonesia to 12 points in the second period to bloat the lead to 15 by halftime. The Energen boys just continued to exploit the disparity in skills to coast to victory.

UAAP Jrs. MVP Jerie Pingoy top scored for the Philippines with 16 points in just 14 minutes of action. Mario Bonleon finished with 15 points while NCAA Jrs. MVP Rey Nambatac added 11 markers. Cebuano Kris Porter finished with 8 points and 3 boards. Indonesia was lead by the 12 points of Jan Panagan.

It was a good win for the Philippines as they came of a loss a against powerhouse Iran in the previous game.  The Philippines will next face Chinese- Taipei in a game that will be very important in determining the top 2 spots in Group F.

22nd FIBA-Asia Under-18 Championships: Pingoy scores 11 in National Team Debut

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia - The Philippines routed Saudi Arabia, 95-52, in their first group match in the 22nd FIBA-Asia U18 Championship. Eleven of the twelve players fielded by Coach Olsen Racela scored at least 2 points. Cebuano Jerie Marlon Pingoy finished with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. The reigning UAAP Jrs. MVP hit 5 of his 7 shots and made his lone 3-point attempt.  Fellow Cebuano Kris Porter finished with 4 points and 3 rebounds.

Coach Olsen Racela did not expect the easy victory but his boys were determined at the get-go as they led 23-12 after the first quarter.  The Energen Pilipinas U-18 Youth Team continued their dominance in the middle quarters as they outscored the young Saudis 53-33 in 24 minutes.  The Filipinos did not take it easy in the fourth even if they were leading by more than 30 points as they limited Saudi Arabia to only 7 points in the final 12 minutes of play for 43-point margin of victory.

UP’s Kyle Suarez led the scoring with 15 points. J-Jay Alejandro, Mark Bonleon, Pingoy and Ray Nambatac also reached double figures in scoring. Waheed Faqihi led Saudi Arabia with 19 points. The Philippines shot 51% from the field while limiting their opponents to a paltry 23% shooting.  They also controlled the boards with a 42-32 rebound margin.  They will next face Kazakhstan, a team that lost powerhouse Iran by 59 points.

Cebu Live had an opportunity to ask 8 questions to one of the best high school basketball players in the country right now.  Cebuano Jerie Marlon Pingoy is the reigning MVP of the UAAP Jr. basketball tournament. His team the FEU-Diliman Baby Tamaraws is currently on top of the standings of Season 75 along with NU Bullpups with similar 6-0 slates. Pingoy is the son of namesake Jerry Pingoy who played in the PBA for Great Taste and Tanduay.  The younger Pingoy is now in Mongolia with the rest of the Energen Pilipinas U-18 team that will play in the 22nd FIBA-Asia U-18 Championships.  Here are his answers to the 8 questions of this blog:

Cebu Live: “What is the difference with your UAAP Jrs. to your Cebu High School league?”
JMP: “It’s very different kay mas daku ni na liga ang UAAP and all the teams kay di basta-basta.” (It’s very different because UAAP is way bigger league than what I am used to and all the teams are strong.)

Cebu Live: “Who is your basketball idol growing up? Local and NBA.”
JMP: “Allen Iverson for the NBA and my father for local.”
Cebu Live: “Whose game are you trying to pattern?”
JMP: “Aside from my father, I’m trying to follow Isaiah Thomas‘ playing style.”
Cebu Live: “How far do you think the Baby Tamaraws go this season?”
JMP: “We are taking it one game at a time and hopefully, we can reach the finals.”
Cebu Live: “What do you miss most about Cebu?”
JMP: “Ay daghan. haha. Especially pagkaon sa Pasil ug pungko-pungko sa Lahug. And of course, my family and friends.” ( Many. Haha. Especially the food in Pasil and “the pungko-pungko” in Lahug. . And of course, my family and friends.)

2012 UAAP Juniors Basketball: Pingoy leads FEU Baby Tamaraws to a win against Blue Eaglets

The hostilities has started in the 2012 UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament. Grabbing early wins were defending champions NU Bullpups, Season 74 runners-up FEU Baby Tamaraws, Adamson Baby Falcons, and the UST Baby Cubs. The Bullpups beat DLS-Zobel Greenies, 80-74.  The Baby Tams subdued the Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 69-58. The Baby Falcons outlasted the UE Junior Warriors, while UST  survived UPIS, 77-73.

Exceptional performers in the opening games were:

Season 74 Finals MVP Ralph Atangan of NU – 25 points 6 rebounds 3 assists

Season 74 MVP Cebuano Jerie Pingoy – 17 points 7 rebounds 7 assists 3 steals 2 blocks

UAAP Jrs. Finals: Pingoy leads FEU-FERN to Game 1 win

Season 74 Jrs. MVP Jerie Marlon Pingoy has once again displayed an amazing statline in FEU-FERN’s 71-67 victory over the NU Bullpups. The son of ex-pro Jerie Sr. finished the game with 22 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Pingoy’s last assist to Joshua Aguilon accounted for the scre that made the game out of reach for NU.

The game was in favor of FEU-FERN early as they took a 33-19 lead at the half. NU slowly eat up the lead to tie the game in the final quarter, 63-all. The Baby Tams almost lost as they put Raphael Atangan in the free throw line at 63-63. Luckily, he missed his free throws to send the game into overtime.

The ex-UC ball player Pingoy scored the first 4 points in the overtime period to give the lead to the Baby Tams at 67-63. The Tams protected the 4 point cushion until the game ended. FEU is now 1 win away from a UAAP Juniors title.
