11th Cesafi: SWU living up to preseason billing, repeats over UV

A few weeks before the 11th season of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament started, the coaches are unanimous in saying that the Southwestern University  (SWU) Cobras are one of the favored teams this season. They attribute the hype to the reentry of legendary coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba to the collegiate scene. Alcoseba has won countless of trophies for the M.Lhullier team and he is widely considered as one of the best coaches south of Manila.

For the first few weeks, that Cobras were falling short of the high expectations that were bestowed upon them by pundits. They had close losses to USC Warriors, USP Panthers, and UC Webmasters. Many thought they will falter from their preseason billing. They suddenly woke up and got a win against the powerhouse UV Green Lancers to start a winning run. They were just learning how to win and when they got the confidence, the Cobras struck to win many basketball games.

Last weekend, the SWU Cobras repeated over UV to tie their records to 8-3 with one more game left in the preliminaries. The Cobras rallied in the second half after being down 26-35 at the intermission. Bonifacio Guillena Jr. scored 22 markers to lead 3 other Cobras in double digits in the 71-67 victory over Felix Belano coached Green Lancers. Eleazar Armecin, Justin Aboude, and Rene Pacquiao finished with 19, 13, and 11 points respectively. The Lancers were led by Edwin Lao, Rene Saycon, and Jerome Silva who scored 14 points each.

The win is fifth for SWU in the second round. Should SWU hurdle the defending champs UC Webmasters, they will clinch the No.2 seed going to the semi-finals.  It would mark the first time in CESAFI history that the University of the Visayas will have no twice to beat advantage in the knockout phase. UV will play USP Panthers in their last game of the eliminations.

Greg Slaughter making waves at the UAAP

21 Jul

A few years back, University of the Visayas (UV) and University of Cebu(UC) had a virtual tug-of-war for the services of a lanky 6 foot 10 Filipino-American.  The young Gregory William Slaughter or Greg Slaughter for short decided to suit up for the powerhouse UV Green Lancers in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI). He led the Lancers to several Championships and winning MVP awards along the way. He stated to get the attention from the coaches and scouts of Manila. His battles with UC big man Junmar Fajardo were classic. Both of them were shortlisted to join in a newly formed Smart-Gilas Developmental Basketball Team then but only Slaughter was allowed to join by his mother club.
The Gilas trained mostly in Manila, prompting Slaughter to decide to move to Ateneo de Manila University. At first, it stunned the UV management but in the end, they relented. When Slaughter left, UV’s CESAFI reign ended after losing to rivals UC Webmasters in last year’s finals.
After sitting out for a year, Greg Slaughter is now suiting up in his first season as an Ateneo Blue Eagle. So far after 3 games he is averaging 15 points per game, 7 rpg, and 2 blocks per game. Ateneo is so far undefeated this season. They have defeated Adamson, DLSU, and NU. In 3 games, Slaughter has shown that he is the premier center in Philippine college basketball.  He has changed countless of shots and his mere presence changes the offensive game plans of coaches. He was voted as the best player of the game twice already and if he keeps this up, he will be one of the most coveted players coming out of college in the PBA.

UAAP 74: Slaughter limited but Ateneo still wins

16 Jul

Way back when Slaughter was a Green Lancer (pages.ph)

Former UV Green Lancer Greg Slaughter got his first taste of the most celebrated basketball rivalry in the country as his Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles battled De la Salle University Green Archers. The Green Archers concentrated their defense on Slaughter who exploded with 23 points in his UAAP debut against the Adamson Univesity Soaring Falcons. The defense of DLSU opened up opportunities for Slaughter’s teammates to score.

The game became the coming out party of freshman phenom Kiefer Ravena, who bannered the Blue Eaglets last year. The young Ravena scored 22 points in the first half to tow ADMU to an 11-point first half lead.  He finished the game with 24 points,  10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 big steals.

Greg Slaughter finished with 7 points (3-4 FG),  6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. His defense was a big factor in Ateneo’s 81-72 victory as he changed countless attempts of DLSU.  Green Archers Center Norbert Torres only made 3 out of his 16 field goal attempts.

With the victory, Ateneo is now 2-0 while rivals La Salle is 0-2.  Next up for Ateneo will be the National University Bulldogs on Thursday.  It will be exciting to see how the Eagles match up with the Bulldogs (0-1) that boast of another marquee newcomer in Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. and big man Emmanuel Mbe.

Former University of the Visayas Green Lancers and CESAFI MVP Greg Slaughter has been cleared by the UAAP board to play for the Ateneo BLue Eagles in the 2011 UAAP Basketball season. Some were questioning his eligibility after he saw action for the Smart Gilas- Philippine National Basketball Team in the second conference of the Philippine Basketball Association. The National team was a guest team in the PBA as part of their preparation for their quest to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics. Some quarters believed that he violated the rule that prohibits players to play in commercial leagues. The board was convinced that his participation in the PBA was for a greater goal rather than for personal financial gain.

Days ago, Slaughter got a recommendation from the UAAP eligibility committee head by University of the Philippines‘ Lailani Gonzales and his eligibility was affirmed in the final meeting before the new season starts.

It will be a very exciting UAAP season and Greg Slaughter is expected to banner the 4-peat bid of the Blue Eagles. There are also other exciting rookies for the league as Keifer Ravena (ADMU) and Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. (NU) playing in the college level for the first time. Cebuano Mark Jayven Tallo would have been in the Ateneo line-up this year but his family decided to forego the opportunity.

PCCL Final 4: UC loses to Ateneo

30 Nov

Ateneo de Manila University routed the University of Cebu Webmasters 74-54 in their Final 4 match-up in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).  The game only turned into a rout after reigning CESAFI MVP Junmar Fajardo got tired.  He finished the game with 30 points and 15 rebounds while dominating the post against UAAP-seasoned players. Even the muti-awarded Norman Black is impressed with the 6-9 behemoth from Dumanjug, Cebu.  Unfortunately for Fajardo, he did not much support from his teammates with no other UC stalwart scoring double figures. Ateneo had 4 players in double figures led by Eman Monfort who had 15 markers.

The Blue Eagles will next face UAAP-rival Adamson Falcons who spoiled an Ateneo-La Salle dream finals by beating the Green Archers 67-59.  It was another outstanding victory for the Falcons who earlier defeated another UAAP powerhouse FEU to sneak into the Final 4.

caloycomment: I would like to commend UC to reach the Final 4.  Junmar Fajardo will be one of the premier big men in Philippine basketball if he plays his cards well.  I am sure that the scouts has put his name in the list of the best young centers in the country today.

UC, USC win Sweet 16 matches

18 Nov

The University of Cebu and the University of San Carlos beat their respective opponents to advance to the next round of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).  The first few matches of this very prestigious basketball tournament is being held at the Cebu Coliseum.  UC and USC will not meet for lone berth for Visayas and Mindanao in the Final 4.

The University of San Carlos advanced by beating the mighty University of the Visayas Green Lancers 71-64. It was a very surprising win since many pundits expected another UV-UC match-up in the next round. UC meanwhile routed a hapless University of Ilo-ilo squad. Junmar Fajardo again led the Webmasters with a 14 point-16 rebound performance.

Matches Today at the Cebu Coliseum:

2 pm FEU Tamaraw vs. JRU Heavy Bombers

4 pm USC Warriors vs. UC Webmasters

caloycomment: The 2 games today are very exciting and would pit some of the best college players in the country.  A lot of these varsity athletes will be playing in pro leagues someday.  I hope that scouts will also be able to see the potential of the Cebu-based hoopsters.

UC Webmasters avert losing streak behind Fajardo’s monstrous performance

25 Aug

Junmar Fajardo led the UC Webmasters basketball team to an 86-79 win against the USP Panthers in the 2010 CESAFI basketball tournament. UC is back on the winning track after being derailed by the perennial powerhouse UV Green Lancers in their last game.

Fajardo’s statline was 43 points, 20 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. It’s an amazing performance, he would have dominated fantasy basketball if there was one. ;)
