Barriga’s victory is the biggest story so far of the Philippine campaign as only 11 Filipinos qualified for this year’s olympics. The last Olympic medal earned was in 1996 when boxer Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco captured silver in Atlanta. A victory here by Barriga will spark a revival of Amateur boxing in the country.

Pinoy Pride XVII: AJ Banal to fight for WBO Belt

25 Jul

Cebu, City – Cebuano ring sensation AJ “Bazooka” Banal (27W-1L-1D, 20 KO’s) will gun for the vacant WBO world bantamweight title in his next fight.  The boxer from the famed ALA Promotions will be facing WBO No.2 ranked bantamweight Pungluang Sor Singyu (42W-1L, 27KOs) of Thailand on October 20 at the newly-built SM Mall of Asia Arena.  The fight will be the main event of the Pinoy Pride VII fight card presented by ALA Promotions.

Banal is on an 11-fight winning streak after his fateful loss to Rafael Concepcion 4 years ago.  He has since captured the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight Title and has the defended the belt 4 times already since he annexed the title by beating Japan‘s Hayato Kimura 2 years ago.  Bazooka is now ranked No.1 bantamweight in the World Boxing Organization rankings after staying exclusively in the Philippines and feasting on some foreign foes.

The last time AJ Banal fought for a world title was in his loss to Concepcion at the Cebu Coliseum.   Banal got knocked out in the tenth round with him leading in the scorecards.  Many pundits felt that he along with other ALA boxers do not have the stamina to survive a grueling 12-round battle.

His opponent, Pungluang Sor Singyu is no stranger to Filipino pugilists as one third of his wins are against Filipino fighters.  Pungluang has beaten the likes of Eden Sonsona, Rey Migreno, and Marvin Tampus. His only career loss was against Belgian Stephane Jamoye in 2009. He is on a 19-fight winning streak while fighting exclusively in his country.

The title fight will surely be an exciting event as it is between two streaking fighters.

Title fight cancelled for Cebuano boxer Rodel Mayol

24 Mar

Sonora, MexicoMandaue City‘s Rodel Mayol was supposed to challenge WBA flyweight belt-holderHernan “Tyson” Marquez but because of some controversy during the weigh-in, the handlers of the Cebuano fighter decided to call off the fight. The flyweight limit is 112 lbs and apparently, the champion weighed 114.4 lbs during the first weigh in. Hernan Marquez was overweight by over a kilo. Marquez was seen as touching the scales during the attempt according to trainer Nonoy Neri and the champion was warned by the WBA representative. Marquez got naked on his second attempt but he was still overweight even if he was allegedly touching the top of the weighing scale. After a minute, Marquez stepped on the scales again only to be overweight by 2 pounds. In the 4th attempt, the WBA flyweight champion suddenly lost over a kilo and “made” the weight.

The “miracle” prompted Mayol’s manager Michael Koncz to withdraw his fighter from the fight. Koncz said that he is not going to risk the health of his fighter to fight an overweight Mexican champ in Mexico. As of the moment, there are negotiations among the handlers about pushing through with the championship match. Mayol is being dangled with more money to agree on fighting Marquez. Mayol though is steadfast was quoted saying ”If they can cheat us on the scales, how much more can they do on top of the ring? I came here very ready to fight and knock Marquez out, but this is not right. We seek justice and an immediate investigation,”

People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao supports Mayol’s decision and he might include Rodel “Batang Mandaue” Mayol in the undercard of his June 9 bout with Timothy Bradley.

Mayol’s professional record stands at 28 wins (21 by KO) 2 draws and 5 loses. He is a former WBC Light Flyweight Champion. Four of his 5 losses came in title fights against Eagle Den Junlaphan, Ulises Solis, Ivan Calderon, and Omar Nino Romero. He captured the WBC light flyweight belt by knocking out Edgar Sosa last November 21, 2009. He lost his title to Romero on June 2010. He is currently on a 4-bout winning streak. Before turning pro, he was a decorated amateur fighter who won twice in the Palarong Pambansa.

Mandaue City’s Mercito ‘No Mercy’ Gesta is still UNDEFEATED!

17 Sep

Parker, Arizona – On the night when Floyd Mayweather, Jr. won via a controversial ending and Erik Morales became the first mexican to win a title in 4 boxing divisions, Filipinos has a good reason to celebrate as well. The reason is a young man from Mandaue, City who headlined a Top Rank fight card in Arizona, a place not too far from the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. Mercito Gesta staked his record of 22-0-1 (12 KOs) against 27 year old Manuel Perez (16-6-1 4 KOs). Perez, who at one time held World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight champion Brandon Rios (28-0-1 21 KOs) to a majority draw.

The fight was deemed to be a test for Gesta if he is ready for a world title shot. He is currently rated No.2 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and No.9 by the WBA. Gesta nicknamed “No Mercy” did not disappoint his promoter, trainers, fans, and the crowd who watched at the Blue Water Hotel & Casino as he won a decisive ten round decision. He raised his record to 23-0-1 and got unexpected praise from his tough opponent.

It was a perfect ending for the 23 year old fighter who trained hard for this fight. He even sparred with the likes of Jorge Linares, Paulie Malignaggi, and Sugar Shane Mosley to keep him sharp and ready for this fight who some pundits deem to be an easy one.  His hard work is definitely bearing fruit and depending on his handlers, he might get a shot at Brandon Rios sooner than later.

Congratulations, Mercito!!!

Gesta stunning in his Top Rank Debut

"No Mercy" Gesta: Future is looking bright (sdfights.com)

Carson California – Mandaue City‘s Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is starting to emerge as one of the Philippine‘s brightest boxing prospects after knocking out Jorge “El Tigre” Pimentel of Mexico in the 3rd round of his debut fight under the Top Rank Promotions. He fit his billing as ” No Mercy” as he relentlessly battered the Mexican and knocking Pimentel down in every round of the abbreviated match. A thundering right uppercut ended the match as referee Raul Caiz Jr. finally decided it was over after the Mexican fighter fell for the 3rd time.

The win improve the undefeated Cebuano‘s record to 22 wins- 0 loss – 1 draw with 11 KO wins. He is now in line to fight for a world title. According to legendary promoter Bob Arum, there is a big possibility that Gesta will be included in the fight card of the Margarito-Cotto rematch in December.  He might be facing the IBF Champion Miguel Vasquez.

caloycomment: A lot of good things are coming for the young fighter. Hopefully, he will keep his discipline and ego under control. A lot of Filipinos became one-shot wonders after tasting the fruits of success in boxing and some champions fall out of favor from their promoters because of overconfidence. Mercito Gesta should always remember what brought him to where he is and always be grateful for the opportunity. Well done, Mercito!!!

Cebuano fighter makes Top Rank debut

Mercito Gesta

No Mercy is all set in his debut (boxingph.blogspot)

On July 9, Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (21-0-1 11 KOs) makes his debut as a Top Rank fighter against Mexico‘s Jorge Pimentel in Carson, California as an undercard of the Brandon Rios- Urbano Antillon Championship bout.

The 23 year old boxer fighting out of Mandaue City has won all his 11 bouts in the US and 8 of those fights ended in a knockout. His performance has caught the attention of the bigwigs of Bob Arum‘s Top Rank promotions who signed him for a multi-fight deal.

To prepare for the fight against Pimentel, a former World Boxing Council Fecombox light welterweight crown holder, Gesta trained at the world-renowned Wild Card Gym where legendary Pinoy boxer Manny Pacquiao trains. He even sparred with World Boxing Association light welterweight king Amir Khan.

If Gesta beats Pimentel, he might be in line for a title shot later this year or early next year.

Melligen loses in Texas

2 Jul

Taken from Exmainer.com

ALA boy Mark Jason Melligen lost his bout to Sebastian Lujan of Argentina.  The Argentinean who extended his winning streak to 12 fights took the ESPN2: Friday Night Fights bout on a 2-week notice after Melligen’s original opponent Freddy Hernandez suffered an injury.

Melligen fighting out of Cebu‘s famed ALA stable dominated the first part of the U.S.-Televised fight.  When Lujan found his range starting at the 4th round, Melligen had a hard time dealing with the Argentinean’s offensive.  He eventually fell down 4 times fround Round 6 and the match eventually ended in the 9th round.

It was Melligen’s first loss in 6 bouts and his 2nd defeat in the U.S. His record fell to 21 wins with losses.  It was a disappointing loss for his because he was touted to be one of the future Filipino boxing champions.

A lot of forumers and bloggers are again noticing the failure of ALA Gym in winning the big matches.  For years the cebu-based gym has been honing the best boxing prospects in the country only to fail in the big fights.  It is tough but hopefully ALA will produce a World Champion before 2012.

Former world boxing champion Gerry “Fearless” Penalosa is now shifting his focus to promoting up and coming fighters in the region.  He now heads the Gerrypens Promotions, Inc. that promotes a bout fight card dubbed as “Dugong Kampeon II” in the New Cebu Coliseum this Saturday, June 25.

Dodie, Jr. quit a promising amateur career (27-0-0 10 KOs) to pursue a professional career where generations of Penalosas gained fame and fortune.  So far, he has KOed all his opponents with 3 fights stopped before the end of the first round.  He is one of the bright prospects of Philippine boxing.

The event will be shown in GMA QTV11 on July 3 at 10 am.
caloycomment: I still remember the first time I saw a live boxing bout, it was way back in 1989 when the ALA boys were still in there 4th of 5th bouts.  I saw Gerry Penalosa, Andy Tabanas and ALA Villamor made new fans at the New Cebu Coliseum. It was like 22 years ago and I can still vividly remember how they impressed a 13 year old kid like me.  They were dubbed as future world champions.  Well, they all became world contenders but only Gerry Penalosa ended up with a world championship belt. Fast forward. Now we are going to see the next generation of boxing talents and hopefully many of them will bring honor and pride to all Pinoy fight fans. Please support the promotions if you can. Good luck and keep on punching!
