Cesafi Seniors:  Southwestern University wins first ever Cesafi basketball crown

The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras won the Cebu Schools Athletic Federation Inc. (Cesafi) Collegiate Basketball Championship after beating the formidable University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 3-2, in a memorable best of five series. SWU won the final game 73-72 after trailing by 49-63 with less than 6 minutes to play. Coach Yayoy Alcoseba unleashed John Augustin Pajantoy to fuel the rally that gave them the improbable Game 5 victory. With a great five game series, it looks like SWU-UV rivalry will rage on in the next few years.  Will SWU keeps it title next year???

Cesafi Juniors: Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu goes undefeated en route to its first Cesafi High School title

The Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles capped their amazing season by sweeping the UV Baby Lancers , 3-0, in their Cesafi High School basketball championship series.  It was sweet revenge for the Magis Eagles that lost the title last year in a decisive Game 5 against the Baby Lancers. The series sweep upped the record of the Magis Eagles to 14-0 in this year’s competition.  Arc Gabrielle Araw-Araw scored 19 points to lead SHS-AdC in its game 3 victory. The sweep underscored the SHS-AdC dominance in Cesafi High School ball in the past couple of months. Will this be the start of a Magis Eagles dynasty in the Casafi?

UAAP Seniors: Greg Slaughter caps collegiate career with another title with Ateneo

Former UV big man Greg Slaughter finished his college career by winning another title with Ateneo Blue Eagles.   The Eagles completed its drive for five as they beat the hard-fighting University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers. With the victory, Slaughter also completed his drive for five as he won his 2nd title with Ateneo along with his 3 Cesafi collegiate titles with the UV Green Lancers. He was once again selected into the UAAP Mytical Five this year. Ever since Slaugher moved to Manila, the UV Green Lancers has never won another Cesafi title.  Is this the end of the Slaughter Curse for UV??

 

UAAP Juniors: Pingoy leads Baby Tams to its first Junior’s title in 25 years

25 years ago, a point guard named Johnny Abarrientos led the FEU Baby Tamaraws to a UAAP Junior’s division title. Fast forward 2012, another spectacular guard led the Baby Tams to another title.  Former University of Cebu basketball player Jerie Marlon Pingoy scored 32 points in the clinching triple overtime game against the NU Bullpups. Pingoy is the back to back junior’s MVP of the UAAP. After the championship, Pingoy now becomes one the blue chip recruits in next’s year UAAP cage wars.  Will he be donning the Tamaraws jersey or will he be wearing different colors next year?

 

PBA: June Mar Fajardo debuts with Petron

After Greg Slaughter left UV, the University of Cebu Webmasters had a two-year reign of terror behind the behemoth from Pinamungahan named June Mar Fajardo.  After his college career ended, Fajardo played for San Miguel in the Asean Basketball League. When it was announced that Petron (San Miguel’s PBA team) got the first pick of the 2012 PBA Draft, the big man decided to join the PBA. As expected, he was this year’s top over-all pick.  He got his baptism of fire when the Petron Blaze Boosters played the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in their season debut. He finished with 9 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 38 minutes of action. He had decent numbers but he was outplayed by JR Quinahan, a former UV Green Lancer. Petron was routed 102-86.  Petron won its next game over Barako Bull and Fajardo finished with 3 points and 7 reounds.  With the possible entry of Greg Slaughter in the PBA next year, will their rivalry be renewed in the country’s top league?

UAAP Season 75: Slaughter leads Ateneo over FEU

In the battle between last year’ finals protagonists, the 5-peat seeking Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles have once again proven their mastery over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws by winning this year’s first meeting between the top contenders, 74-71.  The win was 6th victory of Ateneo in 7 games. Bert Flores-coached FEU fell to 5-2 after the loss.

FEU controlled the first part of the game as they led 21-18 after the first 10 minutes.  The Tams continued to outplay the Blue Eagles in the second period as the took a 37-27 lead at the halftime break.  The second half, however, was a different story as Ateneo trimmed the deficit to just 4, 49-53 behind the outside sniping of  Juami Tiongson and Nico Elorde.  Ateneo took its first lead at 56-55 with 7:48 left after Season 74 Finals MVP Nico Salva scored off a pass from Ryan Buenafe. A 13-5 run gave Ateneo a nine point lead at 69-60 going to the final minute of the match. FEU countered with triples from Mark Bringas and RR Gacia sandwiching a split from the line by Buenafe to trim Ateneo’s lead to 70-66. With 39 seconds left, Salva made 2 free throws to up the lead back to six. In the FEU possession, Fil-Am Anthony Hargrove turned the ball over by stepping on the baseline. Ateneo simply held on to the lead by hitting some free throws for the final tally of 74-71.

Greg Slaughter finished the game with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks. Tiongon, Ravena, and Buenafe combined for 34 points. RR Garcia had a great game for FEU, leading all scorers with 21 markers.

22nd Fiba Asia U18 Championship: Cebuanos Pingoy, Porter reinforce Energen U-18 team

National Under-18 coach Olsen Racela added two new players to the line-up that swept the Southeast Asian Basketball (SEABA) Under-18 tournament for the 22nd Fiba Asia U18 Championship in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia  which will start on Friday.  The two new players are Cebuanos.  Kris Porter who now plays for the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles used to play for the Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles before moving to Manila to finish his high school career playing for the Blue Eaglets of ADMU. The second player added is the reigning UAAP Juniors MVP Jerie Pingoy who starred for the UC Baby Webmasters before being recruited by the Far Eastern University.  The two are expected to play vital roles in the country’s quest for supremacy in Asian youth basketball.  Porter will be relied on defend the post and secure rebounds while Pingoy’s job is to create scoring opportunities for his teammates and himself. On Friday, the Energen U-18 team will slug it out with Saudi Arabia.

2012 UAAP: Efficient Sumalinog instrumental in quelling Maroon rally

Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cubao, Quezon City – Former Don Bosco Technical College high school basketball player Christopher “Oping” Sumalinog scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and had 1 steal in 17 minutes of action to help the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles beat the hard-fighting University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 76-70, in their first encounter in the basketball tournament of the 75th season of the UAAP.

Leading by only 3 at 67-64 in the fourth period after 3-pointers from UP’s Mark Lopez and Mike Gamboa, Ateneo turned to Sumalinog for the needed boost in scoring.  The Cebuano responded by scoring 5 in a 7-0 run that brought the lead to a safe ten points, 74-64, with only 2:30 left to play. Sumalinog who is usually used by coach Norman Black as a defensive stopper hit 2 0f his 3 attempts from long distance while the rest of the Blue Eagle squad went  0 for 7 for the afternoon.

It was a tough loss for UP who are still looking for their first win of the season.  The Fighting Maroons came out strong right at the opening tip and even took a 9 point lead at some point in the second period. It was a stark contrast to the lethargic starts of UP in their previous 3 games. UP held a 40-32 lead at the half-time break. The break, however, was just what Ateneo needed to wake up from their offensive slumber as they outscored their Katipunan neighbors 29-17 in the crucial 3rd period and took the lead for good.

Nico Salva was the game’s top scorer as he managed to get 21 markers.   Former University of the Visayas Green Lancer Greg Slaughter finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Mark Lopez, Alvin Padilla, and Mike Gamboa scored in double figures for the Maroon five. Former Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu and RP U-16 member Henry Asilum started for UP and finished with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.  He was 2 for 2 beyond the arc but he missed all of his five 2-point shot attempts.

With the win Ateneo moved to 4-1 while UP sank to 0-4.

2012 UAAP Senior’s Basketball: Slaughter leads Eagles to victory over Archers

For the first time in history the SM Mall of Asia Arena hosted Philippine collegiate sport’s biggest rivalry yesterday. The arena was filled with throngs of green and blue as the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles had their first basketball match in the 75th Season of the UAAP. Ateneo paraded the same core that the dominated the competition last year led by former University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancer Greg Slaughter, Season 74 Finals MVP Nico Salva, and Super Sophomore Keifer Ravena. DLSU ushered the debut of blue chip recruit Jeron Teng and controversial transferee former CIT Wildkitten/CEC Dragon Mark Jayven Tallo to the historic rivalry.  In the end, the Big 3 of the Blue Eagles were just too much for the Archers to get the first win at the MOA Arena in the storied Ateneo-La Salle rivalry as Ateneo won, 71-61.

Ateneo blitzed La Salle from the get go as they  prevented a field goal from the Archers in 7 of the 10 minutes in the first period. The Blue Eagles led 20-8 after the first quarter with Ravena matching La Salle’s score with 8 points of his own. LA Revilla led a 16-10 rally to trim the lead half, 24-30, with less than 4 minutes left at the half.  Ateneo, however, made a 7-2 run capped by a lay up by Slaughter at the buzzer for 9 point lead at the half.

La Salle finally made a big move in the 3rd period as they outscored the Eagles 24-18 to trail just by 3 going to the final 10 minutes of the game. Teng, Revilla, and Norberto Torres conspired to start the third period with 16-7 run to know the game at 42-all. The next few plays led to 5 lead changes but at the end of the quarter, Ateneo managed to eke out 3 point advantage, 53-50 behind the efforts of Ravena.

At the start of the 4th period, Ateneo showed their inside strength with Slaughter and Salva scoring 4 points each in a 9-3 run to being the lead to 9 at 62-53. La Salle tried to rally once more to close the gap to four at 64-60 with less than 3 minutes left of the game.  The Arches, however, crumble at crunch time managed to score only a solitary point the rest the way to end up in a losing of a 71-61 match.

Ateneo’s Big 3 got the lion’s share of the points as Slaughter, Ravena, and Salva had 52 of the 71 Ateneo points. La Salle was led by Revilla’s 16 while Rookie Teng added 13 markers. Mark Tallo had 0. Former Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology standout Jarelan Tampus finished with 1 point with La Salle. Former Don Bosco Technology Center stalwart Christopher “Oping” Sumalinog went scoreless for the Eagles.

With the win Ateneo leapfrogged La Salle from the standings as the Eagles improved to 3-1 while dropping the Archers to 2-2.

2012 UAAP Basketball: UST exploits Slaughter’s foul trouble to win against Ateneo

For 12 straight games at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) basketball tournament, the UST Growling Tigers lost against the ADMU Blue Eagles. For the first time since August 4, 2007, the Tigers beat the Eagles.

The Blue Eagles who are gunning for their 5th straight title dominated the first half of the game.  They led by 15 points at the end of the first and second quarter. Their solid lead however was easily wiped out in ten minutes as the Growling Tigers came clawing out of the dugout and outscored the 4-time defending champions 30-11 in the third quarter.  Comeback kid Aljon Mariano scored 13 of his 21 points in the decisive quarter to even singlehandedly outscore the vaunted Ateneo Blue Eagles. The Tigers also controlled the final period and took a 69-62 lead going into the last 2 minutes of the game. The Eagles made a last-ditch rally to try and salvage the game as they made a 5-0 run behind a three-point basket by Juami Tiongson and a putback by Kiefer Ravena to bring the Eagles within 2, 67-69.  Karim Abdul answered for UST by scoring on a drive to bring up the lead to 4 and make it a 2-possession game with 10 seconds left.  The Tigers celebrated too much and too early that they allowed Tiongson to hit another long range bomb to cut the lead to just a single point with 5 seconds left. Ateneo, however, was not able to make a quick foul as they were able to foul Jeric Teng with less than 2 seconds left. Teng missed both of us free throws but Greg Slaughter cannot corral the rebound in time for a desperation attempt. Final score 71-70 in favor of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers.

Aljon Mariano had 13 boards along with 21 points to bag the game’s scoring honors. The Jeric pairing of Teng and Fortuna came up with 27 points and 12 rebounds between them. Big man Abdul had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks to somehow outplay Slaughter who just finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds after being hounded by foul trouble in the second half.  2011 UAAP Rookie of the Year Kiefer Ravena led the Eagles with 19 points while 2011 UAAP Finals MVP Nico Salva had 17 markers with 8 rebounds. Cebuano Christopher Sumalinog contributed 4 points in the loss. With the result, both teams are now 1-1.

UST’s next assignment will be against the UP Fighting Maroons on Saturday while ADMU will try to get back on the winning track against the NU Bulldogs.

2012 UAAP Basketball: Slaughter stars for Ateneo in season debut

Former UV Green Lancer star Greg Slaughter scored 17 points along with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks to launch Ateneo Blue Eagle’s “drive for five” campaign with a resounding victory over 2011 semifinalists Adamson University Soaring Falcons, 73-57.

ADMU started slow as they trailed by one ,15-16, after the first 12 minutes of play.  They were able to get a 4 point lead at the half behind the efforts of last year’s Finals MVP Nico Salva. After their trip to the dugout at the half, Ateneo emerged a different team as they started assert their dominance over a Falcons that lost players like Lester Alvarez, Cebuanos Jerick Canada and Jan Colina to graduation. Slaughter started a big 3rd quarter run with a dunk and the Blue Eagles had a double digit lead going to the 4th quarter.  They never gave their opponents a chance and cruised to a 16 point victory.

Salva and 2011 Rookie of the year Kiefer Ravena supported Slaughter by combing for 23 points.  Ateneo’s big 3 scored over half of the team’s points. Former Don Bosco Technical High School player Christopher “Oping” Sumalinog had 6 points for the Blue Eagles. Adamson’s cause was led by Rodney Brondial and star guard Alex Nuyles who had 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The game also marked the debut of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu alum Kristoffer Porter.  He was scoreless in his debut.

Cebuano Kris Porter graces the cover of Chalk Magazine July 2012 issue

Another Cebu product is set to invade the UAAP basketball scene. Kris Porter, who played for Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Passerelle Team, is going to play for the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball team. The good-looking Cebuano hopes to follow the success of former UV Green Lancers Center Greg Slaughter in the famous school in Loyola Heights, Quezon City.  Porter is not new in the UAAP as he was a part of the Ateneo Blue Eaglets last year and he was a member of the UAAP Junior’s basketball Mythical Five along with fellow Cebuano Jerie Pingoy of FEU.

Porter is one of the few lucky Blue Eaglets who got elevated directly to the Senior’s team.  He will probably have limited action in his freshman year but he is expected to contribute whenever Coach Norman Black calls his number.  He will probably be featured in many publications with his unique mix of talent and good looks.  Just recently, he is on the cover of Chalk Magazine July 2012 edition along with DLSU‘s Gab Reyes.  Indeed, Kristoffer Porter is having a good start on his UAAP senior’s basketball journey.

Greg Slaughter gets UAAP title with Ateneo Blue Eagles

After winning CESAFI titles while with the UV Green Lancers, Greg Slaughter continued his amazing college career by capturing a UAAP title while playing with the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles. Ateneo went 16-1 with the Cebuano-American behemoth manning the post.

Slaughter will now make a decision on where to go next. Will he stay in Ateneo or will he go pro? It is one of the things that Philippine basketball fans will be finding out in the coming months. In his post-game interview, he is still undecided. He also gave thanks to his coaches after winning the UAAP title including Rajko Toroman, Al Solis, and Boy Cabahug.

Congratulations Greg! WTG Ateneo!!!

UAAP Season 74: Greg Slaughter part of the Mythical 5

Former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) MVP was selected as a member of UAAP Season 74 Mythical 5. He finished second in the MVP race to super freshman Bobby Ray Parks, Jr. of the NU Bulldogs. For Season 74, Slaughter’s per game averages are 13.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.9 blocks. His field goal shooting clip is 50.77% while he makes 61.36% of his free throw attempts. He had a double-double in 7 of the 14 games in eliminations.

Joining Slaughter in the Mythical 5 are MVP Ray Parks, fellow Gilas bigman Aldrech Ramos, King Falcon Alex Nuyles, and Season 74 Rookie of the Year Kiefer Ravena.

In 15 games playing for the Blue Eagles, Greg Slaughter has led the team to a 14-1 record. They will be facing the Bert Flores-coached FEU Tamaraws in the UAAP best of three finals starting this Saturday, September 24. The game will be aired live at ABS-CBN Channel 2.
