Smart Gilas wins 2012 William Jones Cup after defeating USA, 76-75!!

26 Aug

Miraculous comebacks have been the patent of the 2012 Smart Gilas Team coached by Chot Reyes.  To win the championship, a comeback has to be required.  The Gilas led by L.A. Tenorio obliged to give the Philippines a 76-75 win over Team USA to win the William Jones Cup for the 4th time. By winning against the taller Americans, the Smart Gilas team upped their record to an unreachable 7-1 to assure the team of 1st place.  It is the first Jones Cup title for the country since the Centennial team swept the competitions in 1998.

In today’s game, the Philippines found themselves down by 13 at 55-42 in the closing minutes of the third period. Tenorio conspired with Jeff Chan to trim down the deficit to just 8 points going into the final period at 59-51.  Tenorio waxed hot in the opening minute of final quarter by scoring 5 points.  A three-pointer by Gabe Norwood tied the ballgame at 59-all.  Tenorio gave the Smart Gilas its first lead since the first quarter after hitting a floater.  The game was knotted at 68 a piece after a jump shot by Curtis Marshall. James Justice gave the Americans another lead at 73-72 after a clutch three-point shot.  Marcus Douthit took back the lead for the Gilas at 74-73 with 87 seonds left with a score in the paint.   Jermaine Dearman gave the Americans their last lead at 75-74 with only 36 seconds left in the game clock.  After a timeout, the Philippines took back the lead after Tenorio hiting a jumper off a two-man game with Douthit with just 16 seconds left.  The Americans went empty-handed in the next possession with Tenorio grabbing the important rebound.  USA was forced to foul Jeff Chan with 1.9 seconds left.  Chan missed the first and he intentionally missed the second to slash more time off the game clock.  The Americans had 0.9 seconds left to make a shot from a baseline inbound.  The long heave went to the hands of Freddie Williams but his desperation shot was off the mark giving the Philippines the title.

The trio of Tenorio, Chan, and Douthit starred for the champions by combining 55 points. Tenorio topped the scoring with 20 including 11 in the final quarter. Chan had 5 triples while Douthit manned the paint with authority finishing with 17 points and 12 boards. Wayne Arnold and Justice had 17 each for the Americans who fell to 5-3 for the tournament.

22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championships: Energen Pilipinas rallies past Bahrain; Cebuano Pingoy scores 19

22 Aug

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – The Energen Pilipinas Under 18 Youth Team overcame an 11-point half-time deficit to beat Bahrain and move to the quarterfinals with a 3-game winning streak.  The win, however, was not enough to propel the Philippines to a higher seeding as Chinese-Taipei surprised Iran to grab the No.2 group ranking by virtue of the tournament’s tie-breaker.  The Philippines, Iran, and Chinese-Taipei had an identical 4-1 record with Iran having the best quotient ranking followed by Chinese-Taipei then the Philippines.

UAAP Jrs. MVP Jerie Marlon Pingoy once again conspired with J-Jay Alejandro as they combined for 20 points in the 3rd quarter to turn the double digit deficit to a 12-point lead.  The Philippines simply overwhelmed Bahrain in the second half to coast to a 99-72 win. Alejandro led the Philippines in scoring with 23 big points. Pingoy had an efficient 19 points behind a 9 for 12 shooting from the field.  Janhubert Cani and Rey Nambtac are the other Filipino boy who reached double figures in scoring with 11 a piece.  Ali Hassan Shukralla and Mohamed Buallay combined for 48 markers for Bahrain.

2012 PBA Draft recap: 4 Cebuanos picked

21 Aug

There were four notable Cebuanos who were picked in the recent Philippine Basketball Rookie Draft. Leading the group is this year’s No.1 overall pick June Mar Fajardo of Pinamungahan. Four picks later, Aldrech Ramos of Balamban was picked by Barako Bull then traded to B-Meg Llamados. In the 3rd round, former Adamson Soaring Falcons point guard Jerick Cañada of Minglanilla was picked by the Barangay Ginebra Kings at No. 28. Five picks later, big man Jan Colina of Mandaue was picked the PBA’s newest team Global Port.

June Mar Fajardo is the No.1 overall pick

No. 1 Pick June Mar Fajardo is the pride of Pinamungahan, Cebu.  He played college ball at University of Cebu.  In his career as a UC Webmaster, he was able to lead his school to 2 titles.  With Fajardo, UC ended the 9-year reign of UV Green Lancers at the CESAFI. Fajardo had a great rivalry with now Ateneo Blue Eagle Greg Slaughter during the time Slaughter was still playing in Cebu. The Pinamungahan native then played for the San Miguel Beermen in Asean Basketball League where he contributed well in helping the Beermen reach the ABL finals in its inaugural season.  He was not planning to enter the draft this year but decided to pursue a PBA career after Petron, ABL San Miguel Beeer’s sister team was able to secure the first over-all pick in the 2012 draft.  Petron picked him to make him their premier big man in the near future.

Aldrech Ramos now a Llamado

Aldrech Ramos was originally picked by Barako Bull at No.5.  He switched jackets on the same day as he was acquired by the B-Meg Llamados for Sean Anthony and their 2nd round pick (Dave Marcelo). Ramos was picked higher than what mock drafts placed him.  The versatile big man played college ball for the FEU Tamaraws.  He played for the Smart-Gilas and has represented the country in international competitions. To prepare for his entry to the PBA, he joined the Philippine Patriots for some seasoning at the ABL. At B-Meg or San Mig Coffee (It’s name this season), he will play with Marc Pingris, Joe De Vance, Rafi Reavis, and JC Intal. His addition gives Coach Tim Cone one of the most athletic forward group in the league. B-Meg had injury concerns all-throughout last season and stacking up high quality big men will assure that the team will experience a minimal drop off in performance in case an injury to a front-court player  happens.

Jerick Cañada of Minglanilla was Barangay Ginebra’s 3rd of 6 picks on draft day. The pick is some sort of a move for the future as the Kings are very loaded at that position. JJ Helterbrand, Mike Cortez, and Talisay City’s Robert Labagala currently occupies PG depth chart of the squad. Cañada will be  a some sort of insurance should Helterbrand decides to retire or any of the point guards get injured.  The Kings needed a PG that can manage a run and gun offense as they have drafted highly athletic forwards Keith Jensen and Chris Ellis in the first round.   Cañada not only showed that quality while playing for Adamson in college, he also showed his ability to win in helping Indonesia win its first tile in the ABL.

Jan Colina of Mandaue is Global Port’s 5th of 6 picks.  The former UC Baby Webmaster and Adamson Falcon will try to land a spot in PBA’s newest team. He might be too small to play his natural PF spot in the pros but he has shown his intensity on court against bigger and more talented players in the past.

Among the four, the 2 first-rounders are cinch to play in the PBA in the coming season.  The two former Soaring Falcons face a tall order in order to secure a spot in a PBA team’s rotation. If the two latter picks fail to get a roster spot in the PBA, most likely, they will be playing at the ABL. With so many decent basketball talents in the country, the PBA should consider adding more teams to give more players a chance to strut their stuff in Asia’s first professional basketball league.

21 Aug

The families of the two pilots of the fateful crash involving DILG secretary Jesse Robredo will have to wait a little longer to see the bodies of their loved ones as retrieval operations were halted due to a minor accident involving one of the foreign divers. German diver Danny Brumbach collapsed in the diving operations due decompression sickness and as a precaution the retrieval operations for the remains of Captain Jessup Bahinting and co-pilot Kshitiz Chand were halted.  Brumbach was taken to the decompression chamber onboard the Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP EDSA 2 and he has able regain consciousness after a while.  He is now in stable condition.  Retrieval operations will resume tomorrow morning.

22nd Fiba Asia Under 18 Championships: Jerie Pingoy scores 25 in PHL’s close victory over Chinese-Taipei

21 Aug

Ulanbaatar, Mongolia –   Cebuano Jerie Marlon Pingoy conspired with U16 Youth Squad holdover and captain Rodolfo “J-Jay” Alejandro in handing a strong Chinese-Taipei squad their first defeat in the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championships.  The two rising stars of Philippine basketball combined for 47 markers to lead the Energen Pilipinas U18 Youth Squad to its second straight win in the second phase of the group stages of the 22nd FIBA Asia Under 18 Championships.

The Philippines controlled the first half.  They led at the end of the first period at 17-14.  They continued their steady onslaught in the 2nd period to have a 9-point cushion at the end of two quarters, 43-34. The third period, however, was controlled by Chinese-Taipei as they were able to outscore the wards of coach Olsen Racela, 30-20, to grab a one point lead going to the final period. The fourth period was a virtual see-saw battle and with the Philippines leading 83-82 with over a minute left, Jerie Pingoy completed a clutch 3-point play to extend the lead to 4, 86-82.  After a split by Lee Chua-ji, Taipei was forced to foul Alejandro who cooly sank his pressure packed free throws for the final count at 88-83.

It was a big win for the Philippines as they could clinch the 2nd seed in Group F if they win their next assignment against Bahrain. Taipei could try to complicate matters in the group as they will try to give powerhouse Iran its first loss in the tournament in their next assignment.

Jerie Pingoy top scored for Energen Pilipinas with 25 points.  The reigning UAAP Junior’s MVP also had 2 rebound, 5 assists, and 1 steal while making 11 of his 15 2-point attempts.  Alejandro had 22 points, 9 rebounds,  and 3 triples.  Rey Nambatac had 10 points with 4 steals. The UAAP Season 75 Senior’s Basketball has no winless team left after the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons routed the University of the East Red Warriors.  The win caused a logjam for the 6th-8th places.  UP, UE, and Adamson University Soaring Falcons all tot a 1-6 record.

For the first time in many years, UP held the lead from the 1st quarter till the end of the match.  All 12 players tapped by Maroons Coach Ricky Dandan scored at least a point.  It was a total team effort for a team that is learning how to win after several near-wins against some of toughest teams of the season like DLSU and Ateneo.  UP boasts of one of the most experienced groups in this year’s competition as 8 of its players are in their final year of playing at the UAAP. The Fighting Maroons were, however, led by a 16 year old Freshman from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in this game.  Former Energen U-16 mainstay Renzar Henry Asilum scored 14 points along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. He was able to somehow negate the efforts of the explosive Roi Sumang of UE who finished with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Asilum was backstopped by Mark Lopez who had 10 markers, 8 boards, 4 dishes, 2 thefts, and 1 blocked shot. UP was able to dominate the rebound battle with a +10 margin (48-38).  They also had a 23-6 advantage on assists while causing 21 TOs and making 10 steals.  UP was able to limit their turnovers to just 11 in the game.

The next game for both teams will be on August 25 with UP battling Ateneo and UE facing DLSU.

20 Aug

Ulanbaatar, Mongolia – SEABA Champions Philippines continued its mastery over fellow Southeast Asian representative Indonesia by handily beating the Indons 88-62 in the second phase of the group matches in the 22nd FIBA-Asia Under 18 Championships for Men.
