Lone Filipino 2012 Olympic Boxer Mark Anthony Barriga breezed through his opening bout against Italian Manuel Fabrizio Cappai, 17-7. Barriga set up a second round meeting against Kazakhstan’s Asian Games silver medallist Birzhan Zhakypov. The winner will have a spot in the Final 8 in the light flyweight division of the 2012 London Olympics.
Barriga’s victory is the biggest story so far of the Philippine campaign as only 11 Filipinos qualified for this year’s olympics. The last Olympic medal earned was in 1996 when boxer Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco captured silver in Atlanta. A victory here by Barriga will spark a revival of Amateur boxing in the country.
