Cebu International Convention Center, Mandaue City, Cebu – The long wait is over. The World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) World Championships over-all champion is once again the Philippines. It was a 12 year wait for the country that founded the sport.
The Philippines were able to avenge their second place finish four years ago when they lost the overall championships to the USA team by a lone gold medal. This year, the hosts simple overwhelmed the visitors. The Philippines led by stick fighters from Cebu got a total of 134 medals (62 golds- 36 silvers – 36 bronzes). USA was second in the medal standings with 9 golds, 10 silvers and 5 bronzes. 3rd was Reunion Island of France (9-9-9). New Zealand (6-5-2) and Australia rounded out the top 5 (5-3-7).
The next WEKAF World Championships will be in 2014 in Hungary.
