Starting tomorrow, all 4 lanes of the Marcelo Fernan Bridge will be open to vehicles. The bridge connects Mactan Island to Cebu and it was built to ease the traffic from the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge. The repairs made PLD Construction, the constructor, was scheduled to be finished on August 30 and based on the Department of Public Works and Highways, the bridge are finished ahead schedule. The swift repair is good news for Cebu especially that a major triathlon will be held on August 5.
Last September 5, 2011, a daring heist was executed by notorious robbers in one of the malls in Cebu City. It was almost perfectly executed until it was botched policemen who just happened to passed by the area. Because the passing policemen responded to the emergency, the plans of the robbers changed. It lead to the death of 3 suspects but the leader of the robbers managed to escape the pursuit operations by the police.
The leader Jun-jun Cabando was able to slip out of the island. The Cebu City police never gave up. Last month, they almost got him in a manhunt operation in his hometown of Ozamiz City. The police force persisted with their desire to arrest the slippery Cabando. Finally after 10 months, Regional Intelligence Division chief Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas confirmed in the local TV new broadcast the arrest of Jun-Jun Cabando in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. Lawas told local broadcaster Bobby Nalzaro that the suspect and his arrest team led by Sr. Supt. Paul Labra are on their way to Cebu.
Asked for reaction, the wife of one of the fatalities was happy that the suspect was captured because they case against the people responsible for the death of her husband will now move forward. The arrest of Cabando is a major achievement of the local police force and Sr. Supt. Lawas also gave credit to informants who helped them to pin the location of the fugitive.
