Cebu City Council Bans Corporal Punishment

27 Jun

A new ordinance has been approved by the Cebu City council banning corporal punishment on children.  The ordinance written by Councilors Lea Japson, Alvin Dizon, Margarita Osmeña and John Philip Po II, aims to promote positive and non-violent ways of disciplining children.  If Mayor Mike Rama signs the ordinance into, actions like slapping a child in the buttocks, beating them with a cane or shoe, or making children kneel on salt or mung beans could lead to a 5,000 peso fine or a jail term not more than 6 months or both.  The ordinance covers parents, guardians, and teachers.

Parents or teachers who are used to disciplining children by pinching ears or by verbally abusing them cannot do it in Cebu City anymore.  Councilor Jose Daluz III wanted parents to be exempted from the ordinance but his objection did not prevent the majority from passing the said ordinance. It is now up to the mayor if he will adopt the measure.

27 Jun

The Filipino cue masters are off to a dismal start at the knockout phase of the World 9-Ball Championship. Only 1 of 3 Filipinos have won his Round of 64 match so far. Ten others will have a chance to redeem the campaign and qualify in the Round of 32 for higher prize money and greater glory.

Among those who lost in the Round of 64 is Cebuano Israel Rota. He lost to Han Hao Xiang of China, 8-11 in their Round of 64 match.  All in all, he won 2 matches and lost 2 matches before he was eliminated.  He lost to German Ralf Souquet in his opening game before booting out Lee Wan Su of Korea and David Anderson of Great Britain in succession. The other Filipino participant who got eliminated was Marlon Caneda, who lost to Nick Van Den Berg of Netherlands with a 6-11 score.  Marlon Caneda opened his campaign with a 9-6 win over  Francisco Diaz-Pizzaro of Spain. He lost his second match to countryman Lee Van Corteza before eliminating Ceri Worts.  The Top 64 finish of both players were worth $2,000.  The top prize of the competition is $40,000.

The only Filipino so far who is assured of a Top 32 slot is Dennis Orcollo.   Orcollo avenged his Day 3 defeat to Andrew Kong by beating the Hong Kong native 11-8 in their Round of 64 match.
