Yesterday evening, the Philippines played against a similarly undefeated Japanese U16 team at the 2nd Round of the 2nd FIBA Asia Under 16 Championships in Nha Trang City, Vietnam. The Philippine squad that is supported by Energen used a blistering 18-6 run in the second quarter to pull away and win against Team Japan, 83-72.
Team captain J-Jay Alejandro had a stellar performance finishing with 36 points and spearheading the decisive runs that vanquished the hopes of Japan of topping Group F. Former Magis Eagle standout Rev Diputado backed him up with 14 markers. Japan were led by Yusei Sugiura and Yudai Baba who combined for 56 points.
The defense was good by the Philippines as only 5 others scored with none scoring more than 5 points. The Philippines were down by 1 in the first quarter. It is the first time in the tournament that they trailed after 10 minutes of play.
The next opponent for the Philippines U16 is Iraq while Japan battles Lebanon.
