The Cebu Integrated Transport Services Cooperative (Citrasco) and the Alyansa sa Nagkahiusang Drayber-Operator Alang sa Reporma (Andar) want the minimum fare for a jeepney ride be raised to 8 pesos. The groups cited the increase of diesel prices are the main basis for the increase. Diesel prices in the city has hovered over 40 pesos per liter this week.
Jeepney is the main transportation of commuters in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Talisay. A jeepney strike typically paralyzes the city. The current minimum fare is 6.50 pesos but drivers charge passengers with 7 pesos because of the lack 25 centavo coins.
caloycomment: The public should be consulted on this issue. While the claims of the transport groups are legitimate, it also should be balanced to the sentiment of the riding public. The increase can affect several sectors and it is also critical to note about the timeliness of an increase. Why not move the minimum to 7 pesos since it is what the drivers have been collecting for quite some time.
